How Does a Seat Occupancy Mat Work?
What is a seat occupancy mat?
The seat occupancy mat is a flat pressure sensor in the passenger seat that detects whether the seat is occupied. Based on this information, the airbag control unit decides whether the passenger airbag is deployed in an accident or not. Without a seat occupancy mat, the system cannot control airbag deployment correctly.
The mat is installed out of sight under the seat cover and works purely passively; the driver does not notice it in normal operation. Only when it fails does it make itself known through the lit airbag warning light or a permanently active seatbelt warning on the passenger side.
How does the seat occupancy mat work?
The seat occupancy mat works as an electrical pressure switch: as soon as a person sits down on the passenger seat, their body weight presses the contact surfaces of the mat together and closes a circuit. The airbag control unit uses the resistance value to detect whether the seat is occupied.
Structure of the seat occupancy mat
The mat consists of two main components:
- Pressure sensor film: A thin, flexible film with conductive contact surfaces that touch under load
- Control unit/evaluation electronics: Evaluates the signal from the film and reports the status to the central airbag control unit
On some vehicles the mat is a simple normally open contact (occupied/not occupied); on others it distinguishes between different states by weight, for example whether a child or an adult is sitting on the seat.
Why does a car need a seat occupancy mat?
The seat occupancy mat prevents unnecessary airbag deployment when the passenger seat is empty and allows the airbag intensity to be controlled by weight. With a child seat, it can switch off the passenger airbag automatically, which protects children from injuries caused by the airbag itself.
| Seat status | Airbag response | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Seat empty | Passenger airbag deactivated | No deployment needed, saves costs in an accident |
| Adult seated | Airbag active (full force) | Full protection in a frontal impact |
| Light person / child | Airbag reduced or deactivated | Adjusted to body weight |
| Child seat detected | Airbag fully deactivated | The airbag would injure the child |
Child seat and passenger airbag
With a rear-facing child seat on the passenger seat, the airbag must be deactivated. The force of a deploying airbag can cause serious head and neck injuries in children. On many vehicles, the seat occupancy mat automatically detects whether a child seat is fitted.
What happens when the seat occupancy mat is faulty?
When the seat occupancy mat is faulty, the airbag warning light stays on and the seatbelt warning on the passenger side may beep constantly, even with an empty seat. Depending on the vehicle, the passenger airbag is either permanently deactivated or permanently armed, and both pose safety risks.
- Airbag warning light on: The control unit detects the fault and reports an SRS malfunction
- Seatbelt warning active with an empty seat: The system wrongly detects a person on the seat
- Passenger airbag deactivated: No protection for the front passenger in an accident
- Or: airbag permanently armed: Deploys even with an empty seat (unnecessary costs)
- Main inspection problems: A lit airbag warning light is a major defect
What causes the fault?
The most common causes of a faulty seat occupancy mat are mechanical wear from constant load, moisture in the seat cushion, a broken cable at the connector under the seat, and damage from heavy objects. Improper cleaning or changing the seat cover can also damage the mat.
| Cause | Description | Avoidable? |
|---|---|---|
| Wear | Contact surfaces break after years of load | No (ageing) |
| Moisture | Water gets into the seat and corrodes the contacts | Partly |
| Broken cable | Connector or cable under the seat damaged | Yes (take care when moving the seat) |
| Mechanical damage | Heavy objects on the seat, point loads | Yes |
| Improper cleaning | Too much liquid when cleaning the upholstery | Yes |
How is a faulty seat occupancy mat repaired?
The repair requires removing the passenger seat and partly stripping the seat cushion to get at the mat. The faulty mat is replaced with a new one, the seat is reassembled and the fault memory in the control unit is cleared. The repair may only be carried out by qualified personnel.
- Read out the fault code: Confirm that the seat occupancy mat is the cause
- Remove the passenger seat: Undo the seat mountings, unplug the connector
- Open the seat cushion: Partly remove the cover and padding
- Remove the old mat: Take out the faulty sensor film
- Fit the new mat: Position the matching replacement mat and connect it
- Reassemble the seat: Refit the padding and cover
- Clear the fault memory: Reset the airbag control unit

Frequently asked questions about the seat occupancy mat
Here you will find answers to the most important questions about the seat occupancy mat in the car.
Is the seat occupancy mat only fitted in the passenger seat?
In most vehicles, yes. The mat controls the passenger airbag. The driver’s seat does not need a mat, since a driver must always be present when the ignition is on. Some premium vehicles have additional sensors in the rear seats.
Can you use a seat occupancy mat simulator?
A simulator continuously sends the airbag control unit the same signal that an intact mat reports when the seat is occupied. If the mat is the cause of the fault, the airbag warning light goes out. The passenger airbag then deploys in an accident even when the seat is empty, which is why no rear-facing child seat may be placed on the passenger seat. Our simulators are, according to the product notice, intended exclusively for motorsport use and are not approved for public road traffic (StVO).
Why does the seatbelt warning beep when the passenger seat is empty?
With a faulty seat occupancy mat, the sensor wrongly reports an occupied seat. The vehicle then detects a passenger who is not wearing a seatbelt and activates the seatbelt warning. Repairing the mat fixes the problem permanently.
Do you fail the main inspection with a faulty seat occupancy mat?
Yes, if it causes the airbag warning light to stay on permanently. A lit airbag warning light counts as a major defect at the main inspection (Hauptuntersuchung, HU). The fault must be fixed before the next HU.
