Seat Occupancy Mat vs. Simulator: Which Solution Fits When
What does the seat occupancy mat do, and what happens when it fails?
The seat occupancy mat tells the airbag control unit whether, and how, the passenger seat is occupied. That determines whether and how the passenger airbag deploys. If the mat fails, the airbag warning light can stay on permanently; with some manufacturers, such as BMW and Mercedes, the passenger airbag may then be switched off.
The mat can be damaged over time, and BMW and Mercedes have already carried out recalls for their seat occupancy detection. If the airbag warning light stays on, DEKRA says the car does not get an inspection sticker at the main inspection (Hauptuntersuchung). The light alone does not show whether the mat is really the cause. Only reading out the fault memory shows that.
How does a seat occupancy mat simulator work?
The simulator plugs into the connector of the seat occupancy mat and continuously sends the airbag control unit the same signal that an intact mat reports when the seat is occupied. If the mat is the cause, the airbag warning light goes out, if necessary after clearing the fault memory, and the passenger airbag is active again.
On most versions the device is plug & play: installation takes 5 to 10 minutes, and no seat removal or coding is needed. Because airbag systems are safety-relevant, we recommend having it installed by a specialist workshop.
Seat occupancy mat or simulator: the comparison
A new mat restores seat occupancy detection, but replacing it is laborious. The simulator is quick to install and reports the seat as permanently occupied. The system then no longer distinguishes between an empty seat, an adult and a child seat. Which solution fits depends on who rides along.
| Criterion | Having the mat replaced | Simulator |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | A new mat is installed and, depending on the vehicle, enabled with a diagnostic tool. | The device permanently reports “seat occupied”. |
| Effort | Depending on the vehicle: removing the seat, opening the cover and padding, in some cases replacing the whole seat cushion. Manufacturer recalls (BMW, Mercedes) allow several hours of workshop time for this. | On most versions, installation in 5 to 10 minutes, no seat removal needed. |
| Cost | New part plus workshop labor. The workshop quotes the price. | The price is listed per vehicle model in the shop. |
| Availability | Often no longer available for older vehicles. | Versions for many vehicle models in the shop. |
| Passenger airbag | Adjusted or suppressed depending on occupancy. | Deploys in an accident even when the seat is empty. |
| Child seat | Depending on the vehicle, the mat can detect a child seat. | No detection. No rear-facing child seat on the passenger seat. |
| Intended use | Factory part from the vehicle manufacturer. | According to the product notice, intended exclusively for motorsport use and not approved for public road traffic (StVO). |
Replacing the mat is a job for a specialist workshop. At Airbag24 you can get the simulator for the case of a faulty seat occupancy mat, in versions for the specific vehicle model and the mat’s connector.
When is a simulator an option?
A simulator is an option if the mat is faulty and the airbag warning light stays on, or if no mat is installed any more after a seat conversion. On many vehicles it saves removing the seat. Requirement: no rear-facing child seat is used on the passenger seat.
Please note the usage notice on the product page: Our simulators are intended exclusively for motorsport use and are not approved for public road traffic (StVO).
- Faulty mat: The light is on, and you want to save the workshop hours of a mat replacement.
- Mat not available: Especially for older vehicles, the original mat is often no longer available.
- Seat conversion: Our simulators are also suitable after seat conversions with Recaro, Sparco or König.
- Narrowing down the fault: If the light goes out after installation, if necessary only after clearing the fault memory, that points to a fault in the mat or its connector. If it stays on afterwards, the cause lies elsewhere.
What changes with a simulator installed: passenger airbag and child seat
With a simulator, the airbag control unit always treats the passenger seat as occupied, so the passenger airbag deploys in an accident even when the seat is empty. No rear-facing child seat may then be fitted on the passenger seat. ADAC recommends securing children on the rear seat anyway.
This rule applies to every passenger seat with an active airbag: under § 35a Abs. 8 StVZO, no rear-facing child restraint systems may be fitted there. ADAC points out that a deploying airbag can hit the child seat shell and put considerable strain on the child or even kill the child. If you regularly need the passenger seat for a child seat, check the vehicle’s owner’s manual to see whether the car detects child seats and switches the airbag off. With a simulator, that is not possible. This notice also appears on our product pages.
Building a simulator yourself or bypassing the mat: why we advise against it
Building a simulator yourself or bypassing the seat occupancy mat is risky and is not described here. The airbag control unit evaluates the mat signal, and a wrong value can trigger fault messages or misclassify the seat. That can impair the function of the passenger airbag.
If the system misclassifies the seat, for example as a child seat, the passenger airbag may stay switched off. In one BMW recall, the detection could wrongly classify a small adult as a child seat and switch off the passenger airbag. We do not provide values or build instructions. The structure and connector of the mat differ from vehicle to vehicle, which is why our simulators come in versions for vehicle model and connector.
Conclusion: which solution suits you?
Replacing the mat restores seat occupancy detection but is more laborious. The simulator is installed in a few minutes: if the mat is faulty, the light goes out and the passenger airbag is active again. Because the seat counts as occupied, no rear-facing child seat belongs on the passenger seat.
Replacing the mat remains the right choice if you want to keep the detection function and the mat is still available for your vehicle. A simulator is an option if the mat is faulty or no longer available and you do not want to have the seat removed. Please also note the usage notice on the product page. Frequently asked questions about the seat occupancy mat simulator
Here you will find answers to common questions about the simulator.
Does the passenger airbag deploy with a simulator even when the seat is empty?
Yes. With a simulator installed, the system permanently reports an occupied seat. If an accident triggers the airbags, the passenger airbag therefore deploys even when nobody is sitting on the seat.
Can a child seat go on the passenger seat when a simulator is installed?
A rear-facing child seat must not be placed on a passenger seat with an operational airbag; § 35a Abs. 8 StVZO requires this. With a simulator, the passenger airbag is always operational. ADAC recommends securing children on the rear seat.
Can I use the simulator in road traffic?
According to the product notice, our simulators are intended exclusively for motorsport use and are not approved for public road traffic (StVO). Please read the notice on the product page before ordering.
Is a seat occupancy mat simulator the same as an airbag simulator?
No. An airbag simulator is a test resistor that sits in the ignition circuit in place of the airbag module during fault finding. The actual airbag is then not connected and cannot deploy. The seat occupancy mat simulator, by contrast, only replaces the signal of the mat; the passenger airbag stays connected.
The airbag warning light stays on after installation. Why?
The fault memory may need to be cleared once. If the light stays on afterwards, another cause is possible, because the light alone does not show what has failed. Have the fault memory read out at a workshop and check whether the version you chose matches the connector of your mat.
