Audi TT RS airbag control unit repair(4)

What should I pay attention to with Audi TT RS airbag control units?
The Audi TT RS airbag control unit evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and seat belt pretensioners, and monitors the entire system. If it detects a fault, the airbag warning light comes on. After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself.
The airbag system is safety-relevant. If the airbag warning light is on, the system should be checked promptly by a specialist workshop. Only a specialist business should work on the airbag system.
Airbag24 repairs the control unit of your own vehicle that you send in. This includes erasing the crash data and checking for faults. Whether a particular unit can be repaired only becomes clear after testing.
Which Audi TT RS generations are there?
The Audi TT RS was built in two generations: the 8J from 2009 to 2014 and the FV, also known on the market as type 8S, from 2016 to 2023. Both generations received a facelift during their production run.
The first generation (8J) was offered as a coupé and as a roadster. The second generation (FV) followed in 2016 and ended in 2023.
- 8J (2009–2010) – first generation of the TT RS.
- 8J Facelift (2010–2014) – revised version of the first generation.
- FV (2016–2018) – second generation of the TT RS.
- FV Facelift (2018–2023) – revised version of the second generation.
How do I identify my Audi TT RS airbag control unit?
The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. Also take the year of manufacture and the equipment of your vehicle into account.
The following part numbers are listed for the Audi TT RS. This list does not claim to be complete.
- 8J0959655
- 5Q0959655R
Bosch is listed as the supplier for the 8J version. Fault codes are a first indication. Examples are 00588 (igniter airbag driver side (N95), resistance fault), 01217 (igniter front side airbag driver side (N199), resistance fault) and 00532 (supply voltage, signal too low, intermittent). A single fault code, however, does not prove a defect.
What airbag equipment does the Audi TT RS have?
The Audi TT RS has front airbags for driver and front passenger. Front side airbags are also fitted. Depending on market and version, knee airbags may also be present.
In the first generation (8J), the front airbags are designed as two-stage units, and the front side airbags protect the chest and head area. Equipment varies by model year and version.
You can check the exact equipment of your vehicle using the vehicle identification number (VIN) at an Audi dealer or in the owner's manual.
This is how your control unit gets to repair:
- Have the fault memory read out by a specialist workshop.
- Have the battery disconnected and the control unit removed by the workshop.
- Create a repair order online with Airbag24.
- Send in the unit.
Processing usually takes 3–4 working days (checking, repairing, testing). The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — no coding or programming is required.
