What should you know about BMW XM airbag control units?
The airbag control unit in the BMW XM evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and monitors the entire airbag system. If the system detects a fault, the airbag warning light comes on. After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself.
The control unit is the central component of the airbag system. In a crash, it determines which airbags and belt tensioners must be triggered and records faults in the fault memory. Typical causes of a fault are an accident with stored crash data, voltage problems such as a weak battery, moisture at the connectors and ageing electronics.
The airbag system is safety-relevant. For this reason, any work on it should be left to a specialist workshop. Airbag24 repairs the control unit you send in from your own BMW XM: the crash data is erased, and the unit is checked, repaired and tested.
Which BMW XM generations are there?
The BMW XM is currently built in one generation: the G09 series, in production since 2023. All details on control units and equipment in this section refer to this series.
The XM is a plug-in hybrid and is offered by BMW as an M model. The list below names the series together with its production period.
- G09 (since 2023) – current series of the plug-in hybrid model; production is still ongoing.
Which control unit variant is fitted depends on model year and equipment. Please have these details ready when you submit your repair order.
How do I identify my BMW XM airbag control unit?
The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. The model year and equipment of your BMW XM complement this information, as they define which variant is installed. The vehicle identification number (VIN) helps with the assignment.
The label is usually located on the housing of the control unit. Note the part number, model year and VIN before sending the unit in. Several variants can exist within one series, so the exact assignment matters.
The fault memory displays codes that help with diagnosis. Examples for the BMW XM are:
- 93D4: crash telegram in memory, at least one crash telegram stored
- 93D7: internal control unit fault in the airbag module
- 9534: power supply, lower limit undershot
A single code does not prove that the control unit is faulty. Only diagnosis shows whether it is affected.
What airbag equipment does the BMW XM have?
The airbag equipment depends on model year and trim level. According to equipment information for the base version (model year 2024), seven airbags are fitted, including a driver's knee airbag. The exact configuration of your vehicle is listed in the owner's manual.
Front airbags for driver and front passenger are common in vehicles of this class. The equipment overview for model year 2023 also describes side airbags for the front seats and head airbags (overhead airbags), which are designed to protect in side impacts and rollovers.
The airbag control unit coordinates all modules and reports faults via the airbag warning light.
The route to repair leads through a specialist workshop: have the fault memory read out, and leave disconnecting the battery and removing the control unit to a specialist company. Then create a repair order online and send the control unit in by parcel.
Processing usually takes 3–4 working days: we check the unit, repair it and then test it. The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — coding or programming is not necessary.
