Cupra Formentor airbag control unit repair(1)

What should be considered with Cupra Formentor airbag control units?

The airbag control unit of the Cupra Formentor evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and reports faults via the airbag warning light. After an accident it stores crash data and locks itself. Airbag24 repairs your own control unit that you send in.

The control unit is the central control module of the airbag system. It monitors the wiring, igniters and sensors and, depending on the vehicle, also triggers the belt tensioners. If the airbag warning light stays on permanently, there is a fault in the system, which reading out the fault memory makes visible.

After an accident involving deployment, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself. The airbag warning light then signals a fault until the unit has been repaired. Because the airbag system is safety-relevant, only a specialist workshop should work on it.

The repair concerns your own control unit from your vehicle. The crash data is deleted during the repair. The repair takes place at our workshop in Berlin.

Which Cupra Formentor generations are there?

The Cupra Formentor was built from 2020 in the KM generation. Since 2024 an updated facelift has been available, listed as KM Facelift. Which version is fitted in your vehicle can be determined from the year of manufacture and the part number.

Series production began in 2020 at the Spanish plant in Martorell. The KM generation is therefore the first version of the model, built until the facelift.

The facelift was presented in 2024. It can be recognised by its revised front and rear and a larger infotainment display, among other features. The build periods are a guide only; the control unit and its part number remain decisive.

  • KM (2020–2024): first version of the Cupra Formentor, series production from 2020
  • KM Facelift (since 2024): revised version with new design and infotainment display

How do I identify my Cupra Formentor airbag control unit?

The part number on the label of the control unit determines which version is fitted. In addition, state the year of manufacture and equipment of your Cupra Formentor so that the assignment is unambiguous.

The part number is usually located directly on the unit. For the KM generation, our product data lists the following numbers, among others, without claim to completeness:

  • 1EA959655BJ
  • 1EA959655DP
  • 1EA959655ED
  • 1EA959655FD

Fault codes provide an indication but do not prove a defect on their own. Typical entries include code 00595 for crash data after a registered impact, code 01226 for crash data on the driver side of the side airbag, and code U0151 for a loss of communication with the airbag control unit.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) helps to assign the equipment of your vehicle clearly. Year of manufacture and VIN show whether the part number matches your vehicle.

What airbag equipment does the Cupra Formentor have?

As standard, the Cupra Formentor has airbags for driver and front passenger, plus front side and head airbags. Whether a centre airbag, a driver knee airbag or rear side airbags are fitted depends on the market and trim level.

The airbags for driver and front passenger are part of the standard equipment listed in the equipment overviews. Front side airbags and head airbags are also fitted and protect in a side impact. A centre airbag between the front seats, a driver knee airbag and rear side airbags are fitted differently depending on market and trim level.

This is how the repair works: have the fault memory read out at a specialist workshop. The workshop then disconnects the battery and removes the control unit, as the airbag system is safety-relevant and should only be handled by specialists. You then create a repair order online and send the control unit to Airbag24, well packed. Processing usually takes 3–4 working days: checking, repairing and testing. The repaired control unit returns with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after refitting — no coding or programming is necessary.
