airbag control unit repair Ford Escape 3

airbag control unit repair Ford Escape 1

What should be considered with Ford Escape airbag control units?
The Ford Escape airbag control unit evaluates the signals from the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and monitors the restraint system. If the system detects a fault, the airbag warning light comes on. Airbag24 repairs your own control unit that you send in.
After an accident involving deployment, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself. The crash data is deleted during the repair. The airbag system is safety-critical, so work on it should only be carried out by specialist workshops.
Which Ford Escape generations are there?
For the Ford Escape we cover three generations built between 2001 and 2019. Each generation has its own part numbers, so the build year matters for the correct repair.
- 1 (2001–2007) – first generation; side airbags were optional at the time
- 2 (2008–2012) – second generation; side airbags were standard from 2008
- 3 (2013–2019) – completely redesigned generation with front and head airbags
The build year of your vehicle determines the correct generation. The vehicle identification number (VIN) also shows the build year.
How do I identify my Ford Escape airbag control unit?
The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. Also check the build year and equipment of your Ford Escape.
The following part numbers are known for the three generations. The first four belong to generation 1, the next ten to generation 2 and the last six to generation 3. The list is not complete, so always compare the number on your unit.
- Generation 1: 5L84-14B321-DE
- Generation 1: 5L84-14B321-DC

Typical fault codes include B1231 (crash event memory full and locked), U0151 (communication with the restraint system control unit lost) and B0001 (driver front airbag stage 1, firing circuit interrupted). A single code does not prove a defect, however; it is only an indication for the inspection.
Which airbag equipment does the Ford Escape have?
Front airbags are part of the equipment in all three generations. Side and head airbags, however, vary depending on build year and trim level.
In the first generation, side airbags were optional before 2008, and curtain head airbags were optional as well. From 2008 onwards, side airbags were standard equipment.
In the third generation (2013–2019), US test data lists front and head curtain airbags as well as torso airbags mounted in the front seats as standard. Depending on the trim level, knee airbags may also be fitted. Which modules your vehicle actually has is shown in the vehicle documentation or by a specialist workshop.
The repair process works as follows: have the fault memory read out first. Then the battery is disconnected and the control unit removed, ideally at a specialist workshop. Create a repair order online and send the control unit in to Airbag24. Processing usually takes 3–4 working days for checking, repairing and testing. The repaired control unit returns with all vehicle data and is ready for use as soon as it is refitted — no coding or programming is necessary.
