Ford Expedition airbag control unit repair(5)

What should I pay attention to with Ford Expedition airbag control units?

The Ford Expedition airbag control unit evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and monitors the entire restraint system. If it detects a fault, the airbag warning light comes on.

After an accident, the control unit stores the crash data and locks itself. A faulty control unit can also cause the airbag warning light to stay on permanently and the system to no longer work reliably.

Airbag24 repairs your own airbag control unit via the mail-in process. Crash data is deleted during the repair.

Which Ford Expedition generations are there?

For the Ford Expedition we distinguish two series, each with its own control unit part numbers: the facelift of the third generation (2015 to 2017) and the fourth generation (2018 to 2024). The model year and the part number show which series applies.

The third generation of the Ford Expedition received a facelift. The facelift version was built from 2015 to 2017.

The fourth generation followed in 2018 and was built until 2024. Its control unit has a different part number than the facelift version, so check the series before you send the unit in.

  • 3 Facelift (2015–2017): facelift of the third generation
  • 4 (2018–2024): fourth generation

How do I identify my Ford Expedition airbag control unit?

The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. Together with the model year and the vehicle identification number (VIN), it shows which series applies.

Compare the number on the label with the known part numbers below. In the list, the part numbers of the facelift version begin with FL1, and those of the fourth generation with JL1 or LL1. Check the equipment and model year additionally in the owner's manual or the vehicle documents.

Known part numbers, without claim to completeness:

  • FL1T-14B321-AC
  • FL1T-14B321-BB
  • FL1Z-14B321-B
  • JL1T-14B321-BA
  • JL1T-14B321-BB
  • LL1T-14B321-AA
  • LL1Z-14B321-A
  • LL1Z-14B321-B

The control unit may show codes such as B1342 (internal fault in the airbag control unit), U0151 (communication with the restraint control unit lost) or B1231 (crash event memory full and locked). A single code does not prove a defect, however. Only reading out and testing reveal the cause.

What airbag equipment does the Ford Expedition have?

The Ford Expedition has driver and front passenger airbags. In the 2023 IIHS crash test of the fourth generation, the side curtain airbag deployed. Whether a knee airbag is fitted depends on model year and equipment.

Which airbags your vehicle has exactly is stated in the owner's manual or in the equipment list for the VIN.

This is how your control unit goes to repair: first have the fault memory read out. Then disconnect the battery before removing the control unit. Because the airbag system is safety-relevant, a specialist workshop should carry out the removal. Create a repair order online and send the unit to us. Processing usually takes 3–4 working days (checking, repairing, testing).

The repaired control unit returns with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — no coding or programming is required.
