What should I consider with Lotus airbag control units?
Lotus airbag control units differ greatly by model and year, because not every vehicle left the factory with airbags. For a Lotus airbag control unit repair, we therefore first use the part number to establish which unit is fitted in your vehicle.
Lotus is a British sports car manufacturer based in Hethel in Norfolk. The company was founded by Colin Chapman in 1952 and has been majority-owned by the Chinese Geely group since 2017. The cars are known for their light, compact construction. The airbag control unit evaluates the sensor signals and triggers the restraint systems in an emergency.
If the airbag warning light stays on or the airbag control unit is defective, the cause should be clarified quickly. After an accident, the unit stores crash data that must be erased before the vehicle can be used again. The airbag system is safety-critical, so work on it belongs in a specialist workshop.
Which Lotus models are there?
For Lotus we handle airbag control units for the Elise, Exige, Evora, Europa S, Emira, Eletre, Emeya, Esprit and Elan models. The individual series use different control units, so exact matching is important.
- Lotus Elise
- Lotus Exige
- Lotus Evora
- Lotus Europa S
- Lotus Emira
- Lotus Eletre
- Lotus Emeya
- Lotus Esprit
- Lotus Elan
The Elise, Exige and Evora sports cars were built until 2021. The Emira replaced them and has been on the market since 2022, joined by the Eletre from 2023 and the Emeya from 2024. Older series such as the Esprit (S4 and V8) and the Elan M100 are covered as well.
How do I identify my Lotus airbag control unit?
You can identify your Lotus airbag control unit by the part number on the unit's label. Together with the year of manufacture and the chassis number, this determines the matching variant unambiguously.
Select your model and series in the shop and compare the part number with your removed control unit. The fault memory provides further clues. With Lotus, these fault codes occur, among others:
- U0151: communication with the airbag control unit lost
- B0001: driver front airbag stage 1, deployment circuit faulty
- B0002: driver front airbag stage 2, deployment circuit faulty
- B0010: passenger front airbag stage 1, deployment circuit faulty
Send the removed control unit to us, well packed. The repair takes place in our workshop in Berlin. The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after refitting.
What airbag equipment does Lotus have?
Airbag equipment at Lotus depends on the model, the year and in part on the export market. Older vehicles often had airbags in only some versions, while newer models have them as standard.
On older Lotus models, airbags often depended on the version or on an option. Particularly light variants and racing versions were in some cases built without airbags altogether. Whether an airbag control unit is fitted in your vehicle can be seen from the vehicle documents and the part number.
Modern models such as the Emira, Eletre and Emeya are equipped with airbag systems that a control unit monitors centrally. A defect can impair deployment in an emergency. A defective unit should therefore not be ignored but properly tested and repaired.
