What should I know about MG 3 airbag control units?
The MG 3 airbag control unit evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and monitors the entire restraint system. If it detects a fault, it reports it via the airbag warning light.
After an accident involving deployment, the control unit stores the crash data and locks itself. A defective control unit can also impair the function of the entire airbag system.
The airbag system is safety-relevant, so diagnosis and repair should be carried out only by a specialist workshop. Airbag24 repairs your own control unit once it has been sent in and erases the crash data during the process.
Which MG 3 generations are there?
The MG 3 has been built in two generations: the 1st generation from 2013 to 2024 and the 2nd generation since 2024. Knowing which generation your vehicle belongs to is an important reference point for matching the control unit.
In Europe, the 1st generation was only available in the United Kingdom. The 2nd generation launched in 2024 as the Hybrid+ and was offered in Europe for the first time.
- 1st generation (2013–2024): first generation of the MG 3 as a hatchback
- 2nd generation (since 2024): current generation with Hybrid+ drivetrain
The two generations differ in technology and equipment. Please check the generation and model year before sending in a control unit.
How do I identify my MG 3 airbag control unit?
The part number on the control unit's label determines the exact version. In addition, check the model year and equipment of your MG 3, as these show which variant is fitted.
For the 1st generation, the following part numbers are known to us. The list does not claim to be complete:
- 10104458/01
- 10169028/01
- 30010435/09
The supplier listed for the 1st generation is ZF TRW. Examples of fault codes are B1932 (frontal deployment data recorded), U0151 (communication with the airbag control unit lost) and B0001 (driver front airbag stage 1 ignition circuit faulty). However, a single fault code does not prove a defect. Only an inspection shows whether the control unit is affected.
What airbag equipment does the MG 3 have?
The airbag equipment of the MG 3 depends on generation, model year and trim level. For current versions, equipment descriptions list front, side and curtain airbags; which other airbags are fitted can be found in the vehicle documentation.
Front airbags deploy in frontal impacts. Side and curtain airbags protect the upper body and head in side loads. Whether a knee airbag is fitted varies by generation and trim, and can likewise be checked in the vehicle papers.
The route to repair: have the fault memory read out at a specialist workshop and have the control unit removed there. Then create a repair order online and send in the unit. Processing usually takes 3-4 working days and covers checking, repairing and testing.
The repaired control unit returns with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — no coding or programming is required.
