What should I pay attention to with MG ZR airbag control units?
The airbag control unit of the MG ZR evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and monitors the entire airbag system. It reports faults via the airbag warning light on the instrument panel. As the system is safety-critical, only a specialist workshop should work on it.
After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself. A defective control unit can impair the function of the entire airbag system.
Airbag24 repairs the control unit of your own MG ZR that you send in. Stored crash data is erased in the process, and the unit is tested and repaired.
Which MG ZR generations are there?
For the MG ZR, Airbag24 has only the RF series on record, built from 2001 to 2005. No other series is recorded for this model, so assignment is made by part number and model year.
The MG ZR was built from 2001 to 2005. The following series is recorded for this model:
- RF (2001–2005) – the only recorded series of the MG ZR
The year of manufacture and the vehicle identification number (VIN) help to determine the series of your own vehicle.
How do I identify my MG ZR airbag control unit?
The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version, together with the year of manufacture and equipment of the vehicle. Known part numbers for the MG ZR are YWC001180 and YWC107010.
The part number is the most important clue and is found on the unit itself. The following part numbers are known for the MG ZR, without claim to completeness:
- YWC001180
- YWC107010
Autoliv is recorded as the supplier of the control unit. The fault memory also provides clues, for example B1932 (crash data stored in the control unit), B0001 (circuit of the driver front airbag stage 1 faulty) and B0090 (left front crash sensor faulty). A single fault code, however, does not by itself prove a fault in the control unit; only testing shows the cause.
What airbag equipment does the MG ZR have?
According to tests from the production period, front airbags for driver and front passenger were standard equipment on the MG ZR 160. Side airbags were not available, as a test from 2003 notes.
No verified information is available for head or curtain airbags, so we do not list any here. Whether a front passenger airbag is fitted in a particular vehicle depends on market, year of manufacture and equipment. The vehicle documents, the vehicle identification number or a workshop can provide information.
The repair runs as follows: have the fault memory read out by a specialist workshop. The control unit is then removed professionally, and the workshop disconnects the battery during this step. Afterwards, you create a repair order online and send the control unit to Airbag24 by parcel.
Processing usually takes 3–4 working days: we check, repair and test the control unit. The repaired control unit returns with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — coding or programming is not necessary.
