Polestar airbag control unit repair(5)
What should I consider with Polestar airbag control units?
Polestar airbag control units monitor the restraint systems of an electric vehicle and are built differently depending on model series and year. If the airbag warning light is on, or after an accident, we test and repair the removed control unit in our workshop in Berlin.
Polestar is a Swedish electric car brand based in Gothenburg. Volvo Cars and Geely founded it in 2017 as a standalone brand. The vehicles are still comparatively young, yet the airbag control unit can fail here too, for example through electronic faults, corrosion caused by moisture or voltage problems.
Typical fault patterns are a loss of communication with the airbag control unit (U0151) or a fault in the high-voltage battery disconnect loop of the airbag deployment (B15381B, displayed as SRS-B15381B). After an accident the control unit also stores crash data, which must be erased before the system works again.
The airbag system is safety-critical. Work on it, especially on electric vehicles with high-voltage technology, belongs in the hands of a specialist workshop. Please do not try to open or deactivate the system yourself.
Which Polestar models are there?
For Polestar, you will find airbag control units for the model series Polestar 1 to Polestar 5. Each series uses its own control units, so we match them by part number and year of manufacture.
The shop covers the following Polestar models:
- Polestar 1
- Polestar 2
- Polestar 3
- Polestar 4
- Polestar 5
The Polestar 1 was a plug-in hybrid coupé; the other models are purely electric. Which control unit is fitted in your vehicle depends on the model and the production year.
How do I identify my Polestar airbag control unit?
You can identify your Polestar airbag control unit by the part number on the type label of the removed unit. Together with the model, year of manufacture and vehicle identification number (VIN), this lets you find the matching product in the shop unambiguously.
The control unit has to be removed for this, which a specialist workshop should ideally do. Before removal, note down the part number and the fault codes from the fault memory if they have already been read out.
Send the unit to us by parcel, well packed. On request, UPS collects it from you or your workshop for an extra charge. After the repair it is returned by UPS.
What airbag equipment does Polestar have?
Polestar's airbag equipment depends on the model and the year of manufacture. Modern vehicles of this class usually have front, side and curtain airbags as well as belt pretensioners, all triggered by a shared airbag control unit.
Exactly which airbags are fitted can be found in your vehicle's equipment list or owner's manual. The number of airbags also determines how many ignition circuits the control unit monitors.
The control unit evaluates signals from the crash sensors and decides which restraint systems deploy in an emergency. If it fails, the vehicle usually indicates this with the airbag light, and the airbags may not be ready for use. Have the light checked by a specialist workshop promptly.
