Volvo C40 airbag control unit repair(1)

What should I watch out for with Volvo C40 airbag control units?

The airbag control unit is the central control module of the airbag system in the Volvo C40. It evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and reports faults via the airbag warning light. Airbag24 repairs your own control unit that you send in.

The control unit monitors the entire airbag system. If a fault is detected, the airbag warning light in the vehicle comes on. After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself.

The airbag is safety-relevant. Work on the airbag system should therefore only be carried out by a specialist workshop. Whether a defective control unit can be repaired only becomes clear once it has been examined.

Which Volvo C40 generations are there?

For the Volvo C40 we list one series: Series 1, built since 2021. According to our information, production is still ongoing.

  • Series 1 (since 2021) – the only series we list for the fully electric Volvo C40.

Within a series, control units can differ depending on year of manufacture and equipment. The series alone is therefore not enough for assignment; the part number and vehicle data are decisive.

How do I identify my Volvo C40 airbag control unit?

The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. Also check the year of manufacture and equipment of your vehicle, as both determine the correct assignment.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) also helps to determine model year and equipment. Bosch is listed as the supplier for this model. Known part numbers for this model (not necessarily complete):

  • P32246116
  • P32315799

Fault codes help with classification. Examples of fault codes are SRS-0115 (driver airbag ignition circuit open or short circuit), SRS-0005 (supply voltage too low) and U0151-00 (data bus: control unit does not respond). However, a single fault code does not prove a defect in the control unit; only an inspection reveals the cause.

What airbag equipment does the Volvo C40 have?

The Volvo C40 Recharge is fitted with front airbags for driver and front passenger. In addition, side airbags protect chest and head, and a driver knee airbag is fitted depending on the market.

The exact equipment depends on market, year of manufacture and trim level. The vehicle documents show which airbags are fitted in your car and whether a knee airbag is included.

The airbag control unit controls all of these airbags. If it fails, the entire airbag system can be affected.

The route to repair in brief: have the fault memory read out at a specialist workshop. Disconnecting the battery and removing the control unit should also be left to a specialist. Then create a repair order online and send the control unit to Airbag24 by parcel. Pack it carefully so that it is not damaged in transit.

Processing usually takes 3–4 working days. During this time we check, repair and test the control unit. The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after refitting — coding or programming is not necessary.
