What does error code 0093B mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 0093B indicates a serious malfunction within the airbag system. It typically points to a communication failure or a defect in one of the ignition circuits. The control unit has detected an issue that could compromise the proper functioning and deployment of the airbags in the event of a crash.
Technically, the internal monitoring system of the airbag control unit has registered an anomaly outside the defined tolerance limits. This could be an electrical problem such as incorrect resistance, a short circuit, or an open circuit in the wiring harness.
Once this fault is detected, the control unit preemptively deactivates the entire restraint system for safety reasons. This is signaled to the driver by the permanently illuminated airbag warning light. The system remains inactive until the root cause of the fault is resolved and the fault memory is cleared.
How do you recognize error code 0093B?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error 0093B is the continuously lit airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, warning messages such as “Airbag system defective” may appear on the vehicle’s display. Often, standard diagnostic tools cannot clear this error.
The airbag warning light does not extinguish after starting the vehicle as usual but remains constantly on. This is a clear indication that the control unit’s self-diagnostic system has identified a critical fault and disabled the system.
Another common feature is that workshops using their diagnostic equipment are unable to establish communication with the airbag control unit, or can only do so sporadically. Requests sent to the module go unanswered, making precise fault diagnosis at the vehicle difficult.
Even when communication is possible, error code 0093B usually cannot be permanently cleared. It either reappears immediately or resurfaces after a short time, as the underlying cause persists.
What causes error 0093B?
The causes of error code 0093B are diverse, ranging from issues in the vehicle’s peripheral components to internal defects within the control unit itself. Common triggers include faulty connectors, broken cables, moisture damage, or non-erasable crash data.
One of the most frequent causes is defective connectors or broken wires in the wiring harness leading to the airbag control unit or individual airbag components. Vibrations, aging, or mechanical damage can lead to contact problems or interruptions.
Defective airbag plugs or sensors in the vehicle can also trigger this error. If a sensor provides incorrect readings or its connection becomes corroded, the control unit interprets this as a fault in the ignition circuit.
Moisture damage or short circuits directly on the control unit’s circuit board represent another serious cause. Ingress of water or age-related component degradation can result in internal malfunctions that generate error code 0093B.
In some cases, software errors or incorrect coding of the control unit following a replacement may also be responsible for the fault. The control unit then fails to properly match the vehicle’s configuration.
Especially after a crash, crash data is stored in the control unit’s memory. These data lock the module and often cannot be erased via the standard OBD2 interface. As a result, the control unit continues to report the fault even though the external components have already been repaired.
Which vehicles are affected by 0093B?

Upon receipt at Airbag24, the control unit undergoes a comprehensive incoming inspection. Depending on the fault pattern, stored crash data is erased by direct access to the memory chip, or defective hardware components on the circuit board are identified and replaced.
Following successful repair, the control unit is subjected to a functional test on a specialized test bench. This ensures that error code 0093B has been permanently resolved and that the device is fully operational once again.
The repaired control unit is shipped back to you. After installation in the vehicle, the vehicle’s fault memory must be cleared as a final step. We provide a 12-month warranty on all our repairs.
