What does error code 00D4 mean?
Error code 00D4 indicates a critical communication failure between the instrument cluster (DIM - Driver Information Module) and the airbag control unit (SRS). The cause is usually an underlying hardware defect, often in the form of faulty solder joints on the instrument cluster’s circuit board or defective connectors, which prevent stable data transmission.
Technically speaking, the SRS control unit cannot receive valid signals from the instrument cluster via the data bus, nor can it send signals to it. This information exchange is essential for the system self-test, during which, among other things, the status of the airbag warning light (SRS LED) in the instrument cluster is checked.
If this communication is interrupted, the safety system enters a fault mode, activates the warning light, and stores error code 00D4 in the fault memory to alert the driver to a potential safety issue.
How do you recognize error code 00D4?
The primary symptom of error code 00D4 is a continuously or intermittently illuminated airbag warning light on the dashboard. Often, although the fault can be cleared with a diagnostic tool, it reappears shortly thereafter. Accompanying symptoms may include additional malfunctions in the instrument cluster, such as a misaligned clock or failures of the onboard computer.
The airbag or SRS warning light remains active after turning on the ignition and does not extinguish as expected following the initial system check. In some cases, it may also flicker irregularly while driving.
Another clear indication is the behavior when reading the fault memory. Error code 00D4 stubbornly returns after being cleared, as the underlying hardware issue persists.
Occasionally, other displays and functions of the instrument cluster are also affected. These include, for example, incorrect readings on the onboard computer, malfunctioning indicator lights, or failure of audible signals such as the seatbelt warning.
What causes error code 00D4?
The main cause of error code 00D4 is hardware defects in the instrument cluster (DIM). Most commonly, these involve cracked or cold solder joints on the circuit board, resulting from aging and thermal stress. Other causes include defective connectors, a faulty SRS LED in the dashboard, or damaged wiring harnesses.
Over time, vibrations and temperature fluctuations lead to material fatigue on the instrument cluster’s circuit board. This results in loose connections and broken traces, disrupting communication with the airbag control unit.
A defective SRS warning light (LED) within the instrument cluster itself can also trigger this error. Since the airbag system activates the light during its self-test and expects feedback, a faulty LED is interpreted as a communication error.
Loose or corroded connectors at the instrument cluster or the airbag control unit represent another common source of trouble. Damage to the wiring harness—such as that caused by improper repairs or crushing—can likewise interrupt data transmission.
In which models does error code 00D4 occur?
Error code 00D4 is a well-known issue in numerous Volvo models manufactured around the early 2000s. The first generation of the Volvo XC90 is particularly frequently affected. However, this error also regularly appears in other series, such as the S60, V70, S80, and XC70.

How is error code 00D4 professionally repaired?
Professional repair focuses on eliminating the hardware causes within the instrument cluster. After sending the removed unit to Airbag24, faulty solder joints on the circuit board are reworked, defective electronic components such as the SRS LED are replaced, and all connections are thoroughly inspected at the component level.
Upon receipt of the dismantled instrument cluster, a detailed analysis of the circuit board is performed. Specialized measuring devices are used to examine communication pathways to the SRS system and pinpoint faulty solder joints or traces.
The central step of the repair is revising the circuit board. Experienced technicians professionally resolder critical contact points to restore a durable and stable connection. Defective components, such as the SRS LED or CAN‑communication chips, are replaced as needed.
If crash data is stored in the airbag control unit due to an accident, it will also be erased during the repair process, restoring the safety system to full functionality.
