What does error code 00D5 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 00D5, often listed as SRS-00D5 in diagnostic logs, indicates a critical communication failure of the airbag control unit. The module can no longer communicate correctly over the CAN bus with other key control units such as the instrument cluster or the gateway, resulting in the deactivation of the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, this means that data packets from the airbag control unit are either not being transmitted or are no longer being received by other nodes on the vehicle network. This disruption in safety‑critical communication prevents the proper deployment of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash.
The root cause usually lies directly on the control unit’s circuit board. Common culprits include failed electronic components such as the CAN transceiver—responsible for sending and receiving signals—or voltage regulators. Without stable communication, the system automatically enters a permanent fault state for safety reasons.
How do you recognize error code 00D5?
The primary symptom of error code 00D5 is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This is often accompanied by a text message such as “SRS Airbag Service Urgent” or “Airbag Service Required.” In this condition, the airbag system is completely disabled.
Another clear indication is that the error code cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic tools. The fault either reappears immediately, or communication with the airbag control unit simply cannot be established at all.
In rare cases, the warning light may remain off despite the stored fault, suggesting a more profound underlying issue. Often, related codes such as SRS-00D0 or the generic communication fault U3000 are also logged in the fault memory.
What causes error code 00D5?
The primary cause of error code 00D5 is defective electronic components directly within the airbag control unit. Most commonly, the CAN transceiver, voltage regulators, or memory chips are damaged due to aging or voltage fluctuations. External factors like cable breaks or corrosion at connector contacts are less frequent but should still be checked.
External influences such as corroded connectors on the control unit or a broken cable in the CAN bus line can also disrupt signal transmission and trigger the fault. A thorough inspection of the wiring before removing the control unit is therefore advisable.
An unstable power supply—caused, for example, by a weak vehicle battery or a faulty alternator—can likewise lead to malfunctions in sensitive electronics. In some cases, age‑related failures of capacitors or resistors on the circuit board may also be responsible.
Often, error code 00D5 does not occur alone. Accompanying fault codes such as SRS-00D0 (a very similar communication error), U3000 (a general communication fault in the vehicle network), or B1000 (an internal control unit error) provide additional clues about the source of the problem.
Which vehicles are affected by 00D5?
Error code 00D5 primarily affects older Volvo models built between approximately 1998 and 2014 that use a CAN‑based network. Models such as the XC90, V70, S60, and S80 are particularly frequently impacted. At Airbag24, we repair this error code for many of these Volvo models.
