What does error code 0B_70 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 0B_70 indicates a specific, one-time occurrence of a fault in the airbag control unit. Specifically, the entry “Left crash sensor closed (once)” means that the left crash sensor reported a brief short circuit or a closed contact. The control unit stores this event as a temporary fault.
The airbag control unit is the central monitoring system for the entire restraint system. It continuously receives and processes signals from the connected crash sensors. If an electrical irregularity occurs—such as a momentary ground short at the left sensor—the system immediately logs this as fault 0B_70 in its memory.
Although the fault is classified as “once” (one-time), this entry triggers activation of the airbag warning light. For safety reasons, the system enters a fault state until the underlying cause has been inspected and the fault memory professionally cleared. Simply erasing the fault via software without addressing the root cause usually does not provide a lasting solution.
How can you recognize fault 0B_70?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of fault 0B_70 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating an active, safety‑relevant fault in the restraint system. Other functional failures are typically not observed.
As soon as the ignition is switched on, the airbag control unit performs a self‑test. If it detects the stored fault 0B_70, it immediately activates the warning light to alert the driver. The vehicle remains drivable, but full functionality of the airbag system can no longer be guaranteed.
During diagnostics with a suitable workshop tester—such as the VAS 5051—the fault code 0B_70 can be clearly read from the airbag control unit’s fault memory. This confirms the suspicion and narrows the troubleshooting down to the area of the left crash sensor.
What causes fault code 0B_70?
The main cause of fault code 0B_70 is a physical or electrical disruption in the signal path of the left crash sensor. Common culprits include defective sensors, damaged cables due to mechanical stress, corroded connectors, or moisture ingress leading to the reported short circuit.
An internal defect within the crash sensor itself can result in either a permanent or intermittent short circuit. Similarly, damaged sensor wiring—caused, for example, by rodent bites or abrasion along the vehicle body—can create unintended contact and trigger the fault.
Poor connector contacts are another frequent source of trouble. Corrosion caused by moisture or vibrations can alter contact resistance or lead to a short between pins. In rarer cases, issues with the coil spring or moisture inside the control unit itself may also cause misinterpretations of sensor signals.
