What does error code 1 0 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 1 0 indicates a specific internal fault within the airbag control unit, particularly occurring in Rover 600 and 623 models. The cause is typically a hardware issue, such as defective electronic components on the circuit board, damaged cables, sensors, or connectors—often triggered by water damage or mechanical wear.
This error code is detected by the airbag control unit itself and stored in its internal fault memory when a malfunction occurs in the safety system. Electronically, this means that a component or signal path is operating outside of specified tolerances. As a result, the system switches to a safety mode and deactivates the airbag function to prevent unintended deployment.
Diagnosis on the circuit board often reveals an “internal error.” This can range from a faulty sensor or a short circuit caused by moisture to a damaged electronic component on the printed circuit board. Precise analysis is crucial, as this fault directly impacts occupant safety.
How do you recognize error code 1 0?
The primary symptom of error code 1 0 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, there is also a complete loss of communication, making it impossible to read the control unit with standard diagnostic tools. This points to a severe internal defect.
The most noticeable sign is the permanently lit airbag warning light. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating that the restraint system is not operational. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may fail to deploy.
Another critical symptom is the lack of communication with the control unit. When a workshop attempts to read the fault memory via the OBD interface, the airbag control unit fails to respond. This condition often confirms a deep-seated electronic fault within the module’s hardware.
What causes error code 1 0?
The main causes of error code 1 0 are electronic faults on the control unit’s circuit board, frequently due to water damage or voltage surges. Other common reasons include worn-out connectors—especially from seat movements—damaged seatbelt pretensioner cables, a defective coil spring on the steering wheel, or crash data stored in the device following an accident.
First and foremost are internal electronic component failures. Water damage can lead to short circuits and corrosion on the circuit board, while voltage surge damage can destroy sensitive microchips. Pinholes or physical damage to connectors are also frequent sources of failure.
Mechanical wear on cables and connectors is another typical cause. In particular, cable connections leading to the seatbelt pretensioners beneath the seats can break or develop loose contacts due to constant seat adjustments. Similarly, a damaged coil spring on the steering wheel can disrupt communication with the driver-side airbag.
After an accident, the control unit stores so‑called crash data. This data permanently locks the module and must be professionally erased before it can be reused. In this state, the device will also report an internal fault.
