What does error code 1 + 5 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 1 + 5 indicates an internal, non-specific fault in the airbag control unit. This code suggests that the unit’s self-diagnosis has detected a critical hardware or data error that compromises the functionality of the entire airbag system and causes the warning light to illuminate.
Technically speaking, this means that internal components such as memory modules or the power supply may be defective. Similar to the general control unit error 65535 (FFFF), the module enters a safety mode to prevent false activations and signals an unrecoverable condition.
A common cause is permanently stored event data, such as crash information following an accident. This data often cannot be erased using standard diagnostic tools, permanently locking the control unit and triggering error code 1 + 5.
How do you recognize error code 1 + 5?
The primary symptom of error code 1 + 5 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. In many cases, communication between a diagnostic tool and the airbag control unit also ceases, making further troubleshooting at the workshop more difficult.
The warning light does not turn off after starting the engine, indicating a persistent, safety-critical fault. In this state, the entire airbag system is typically fully deactivated.
The loss of communication, similar to the fault pattern seen with code B 1000 in Mercedes-Benz models, shows that the control unit is internally locked and no longer responds to requests via the CAN bus or other diagnostic lines. Further reading of additional error codes then becomes impossible.
What are the causes of error code 1 + 5?
The main cause of error code 1 + 5 is usually an internal hardware defect in the control unit, often triggered by overvoltage or aging of electronic components. Another very common cause is stored crash data following an airbag deployment, which permanently locks the unit.
After an accident, so-called crash data is irrevocably written into the control unit’s memory. As intended by vehicle manufacturers, this data cannot be deleted using standard diagnostic equipment, leading to permanent deactivation of the system.
Overvoltage damage, documented in BMW models with error 93F9, can harm internal circuits. Likewise, faulty connectors between the control unit and airbag components can result in sporadic or permanent malfunctions, pushing the unit into a fault mode.
In which vehicles does error code 1 + 5 occur?
Error code 1 + 5 is particularly well-known in older vehicle models such as the Rover 400 R8. However, internal control unit defects can occur across a wide range of manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Opel.
