What does error code 10-1 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 10-1 in a Rover 400 RT indicates a specific internal fault within the airbag control unit. It is a hardware issue that requires electronic repair at the component level. Diagnosis is performed via a flashing pattern of the airbag warning light, not through standard OBD scanners.
This error code suggests that one or more electronic components on the control unit’s circuit board have failed. Unlike faults pointing to external sensors or wiring problems (e.g., codes 32 or 33 for high resistance), code 10-1 isolates the problem directly to the control unit itself.
Diagnosis of this type is typical for these older Rover models. The control unit communicates the code through the airbag warning light on the dashboard. Code 10-1 is indicated by a specific blinking pattern: a long blink for “10,” followed by a short pause and a single short blink for “1.”
Technically, this means the microcontroller’s self-diagnostic system has detected an irreparable anomaly in its own circuitry or in a critical memory area. As a result, the system enters a safety mode that prevents airbag deployment and keeps the warning light permanently illuminated.
How can you recognize error code 10-1?
The primary symptom of error code 10-1 is a continuously lit or flashing airbag warning light after the ignition is turned on. Another clear indication is the control unit’s inability to communicate with external diagnostic tools such as OBD scanners or TECH2.
The airbag indicator light (SRS light) does not extinguish as expected within a few seconds after starting the vehicle. Instead, it either remains constantly on or displays the error code as a blinking sequence, signaling an active, non‑erasable fault in the system.
A key technical symptom is the loss of communication. When a workshop attempts to read the airbag control unit, the connection fails. The module does not respond to diagnostic requests, reinforcing suspicion of a complete internal failure or a severe hardware defect.
In some cases, the fault results from crash data stored after an accident. Here too, the error is permanent and cannot be cleared using conventional methods, mimicking symptoms of an internal malfunction.
What causes error code 10-1?
The main cause of error code 10-1 is a defect in electronic components such as capacitors, resistors, or the microcontroller directly on the control unit’s circuit board. External factors like voltage surges during jump-starts, water damage, or accumulated crash data can also trigger this error.
The most common reason is age‑related degradation of electronic components. Capacitors, in particular, may lose capacitance or leak, leading to instability in the microcontroller’s power supply and triggering an internal fault.
External factors can likewise damage the control unit. Reversing battery polarity or voltage spikes during improper jump-starts can destroy sensitive components on the circuit board. Since the control unit is often installed in the footwell or beneath a seat, ingress of water can cause corrosion at connectors and short circuits.
Another potential trigger is the storage of crash data. After an airbag deployment, the control unit locks itself for safety reasons. This condition is interpreted as an internal fault and remains persistent until the data is professionally reset.
Which vehicles exhibit error code 10-1?
Error code 10-1 is highly specific and occurs primarily in vehicles of the Rover 400 RT series. These models, manufactured roughly between 1995 and 2000, use an airbag control unit that generates this particular internal error code.
