What does error code B1042 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1042 indicates a critical malfunction in the power supply to the airbag control unit. The system detects that the electrical supply is outside the specified tolerances, which jeopardizes the proper functioning of the entire safety system. This fault is classified as a validated, pending fault and prevents the completion of internal system tests.
Technically speaking, the definition for error B1042 is: "Control Unit Power Supply Malfunction." The SRS/airbag control unit (ECU) continuously monitors its own power supply. If the voltage deviates from the setpoint, this error code is triggered to signal a potentially safety-critical issue.
The error is output by the control unit using an 11-bit coding scheme and carries the associated raw code 9042. These specific identifiers help technicians accurately pinpoint the problem within the system.
The status of the error code typically indicates that a pending fault exists, the system test could not be completed, and a validated fault was present at the time of the diagnostic request. This means the fault is permanent, not just intermittent.
How can you recognize error B1042?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1042 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, during diagnostics, communication issues with the control unit may occur, as an unstable power supply can disrupt data transmission. In the fault memory, the code is stored as “pending” and “validated.”
The activated airbag warning light is a direct indication that the vehicle’s passive safety system is either non-functional or only partially operational. This poses a significant safety risk, as airbags or seatbelt pretensioners might fail to deploy in the event of a crash.
During workshop diagnostics, the control unit may fail to respond to requests from the diagnostic tool. A faulty power supply can impair the internal electronics so severely that stable communication via the diagnostic interface becomes impossible.
What causes error code B1042?
The main cause of error B1042 is a defective power supply to the airbag control unit. This often results from faulty or loose connectors, corroded contacts, or damaged cables. Less frequently, but still possible, an internal defect within the control unit itself—where voltage-regulating components on the circuit board fail—can also trigger this error.
A disrupted power supply is the primary cause. Defective or loose connections between the control unit and the vehicle’s electrical system interrupt the stable voltage delivery essential for operating the sensitive microelectronics.
Connection and contact faults are commonly responsible for triggering this error. Loose or damaged connectors, electrical contacts impaired by corrosion or wear, or broken cables in the wiring harness are typical sources of failure that must be checked before replacing the control unit.
A defective control unit can also be the root cause. An internal hardware fault—for example, in the voltage converters or capacitors on the circuit board—directly leads to this error message. In such cases, specialized electronic repair or replacement of the unit is required.
