What does error code 1220 in the airbag control unit mean?
Error code 1220 indicates a serious internal hardware failure in the airbag control unit. In most cases, the cause lies in defective electronic components such as processors or capacitors, an internal short circuit, or damage caused by moisture. The control unit can no longer ensure its safety functions.
This specific diagnostic code suggests that the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis has detected a critical fault. This could be a defective component—such as a processor, capacitor, or resistor—that is essential for the proper operation of the airbag system.
Stored crash data that cannot be erased may also trigger this error. After an accident or a severe impact, the control unit locks itself to prevent false activations. This condition is likewise recorded as internal error 1220 in the fault memory.
As a result, the entire airbag system is disabled to avoid endangering vehicle occupants through uncontrolled deployments. A professional repair at the component level is absolutely necessary to restore functionality.
What symptoms appear with error code 1220?
The primary symptom of error code 1220 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the error code often cannot be cleared from the fault memory, and communication with the control unit via a diagnostic tool is no longer possible. In this state, the airbag function is completely deactivated.
The most obvious sign is the active airbag warning light (SRS light). It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, alerting the driver to a safety-related issue and indicating that the airbags are non-functional.

What are the most common causes of error 1220?
The main cause of error code 1220 is an internal hardware failure. This includes defective components such as processors, capacitors, or resistors, damage caused by overvoltage or moisture, and internal short circuits. Another frequent cause is stored crash data that blocks the unit after an accident.
Electronic components inside the control unit can fail due to aging, vibrations, or thermal stress. In particular, the processor or internal memory chips are prone to defects that directly lead to error code 1220.
External factors like moisture ingress can cause corrosion on the circuit board and short circuits. Similarly, voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system—such as during a jump-start—can irreparably damage sensitive components in the airbag control unit.
Stored crash data is another key cause. After the airbags or seatbelt pretensioners have deployed, a permanent entry is written into the control unit’s memory. This lockout entry often cannot be removed with standard diagnostic tools and is displayed as an internal fault.
