What does error code 1304 mean?
Error code 1304, often specified as B1304, indicates a problem with the seatbelt pretensioner on the front left side (driver’s side). The airbag control unit has detected that the component is “not configured,” which may point to an open circuit, a faulty sensor, or an internal fault within the control unit itself.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit, acting as the central control module, continuously monitors all safety‑related components. If the electrical resistance in the seatbelt pretensioner circuit falls outside the predefined tolerance range, this error is logged in the fault memory and the airbag warning light illuminates.
The system then switches to a safe mode. This means that in the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners might not deploy as intended. The control unit’s self‑diagnostic function stores the error to enable targeted repairs.
How can you recognize error code 1304?
The most obvious symptom of error code 1304 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle, alerting the driver to an active, safety‑critical fault in the restraint system.
In addition to the warning light, error code 1304 or B1304 is accompanied by a corresponding description stored in the airbag control unit’s fault memory. This information can be retrieved using a suitable OBD‑II diagnostic tool.
Externally, no other symptoms are usually apparent. The vehicle operates normally under normal driving conditions; however, the protective function of the airbag system is impaired or, in the worst case, completely disabled.
What causes error code 1304?
The primary causes of error 1304 typically involve physical defects in the peripheral components of the airbag control unit. These include poor connector contacts, cable breaks caused by seat movement, a defective coil spring in the steering column, or damaged sensors.
Especially in vehicles with frequently adjusted seats, the connectors beneath the seats can suffer. A loose connection or corrosion at the seatbelt pretensioner connector is a very common source of failure.
The coil spring, which undergoes mechanical stress with every steering movement, can also wear out or break, leading to interruptions in the circuit. Faults in this component can affect the entire restraint system.
In certain models, such as the Škoda Octavia RS, issues have also been reported with the passenger seat occupancy mat or its associated connector. Although this involves a different component, it highlights the vulnerability of wiring in the seating area.
Rarely, water ingress directly into the control unit can cause short circuits and corrosion on the circuit board, potentially triggering a wide range of errors—including 1304.
