What does error code 1515 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 1515 indicates a serious, internal hardware defect in the airbag control unit (SRS ECU). This is not a fault affecting external components such as sensors or cables, but rather a defect on the control unit’s circuit board itself, which disables the safety function of the entire airbag system.
Technically, error 1515 is classified as a “general internal error.” This means that the control unit’s self-diagnostic system has detected a malfunction within its own electronics. The root causes lie directly in the components mounted on the circuit board.
Often, aging capacitors, defective resistors, or faulty integrated circuits (ICs) are responsible for this issue. Due to this internal defect, the control unit can no longer correctly deploy the airbags and activate the seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash, which is why the airbag warning light remains constantly illuminated.
How do you recognize error code 1515?
The most obvious symptom of error code 1515 is a continuously lit or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, diagnostic tools may fail to establish communication with the airbag control unit, or communication may be severely limited.
The persistently illuminated airbag warning light is the primary indicator alerting the driver to this critical system failure. It does not extinguish even after restarting the vehicle.
During workshop diagnostics, a clear picture emerges: reading the fault memory reveals code 1515, with no additional errors logged for sensors, seat occupancy mats, or airbag modules. Attempts to clear the error usually fail—the code reappears immediately, confirming that this is a persistent hardware fault.
In rarer cases, the error may occur depending on temperature. A so‑called “loose connection” inside the control unit—often caused by a cold solder joint—can result in the error sporadically appearing or disappearing as the vehicle interior warms up.
What causes error code 1515?
The main cause of error code 1515 is a hardware defect on the airbag control unit’s circuit board. Aging of electronic components, thermal stress, and moisture lead to failures in capacitors, ICs, or solder joints. Software faults are extremely rare in this specific case.
The most common technical causes are defective components. Over time, capacitors lose their capacitance, resistors change their resistance values, or microchips (ICs) fail. This component aging is the most frequent reason for error 1515, especially in older vehicles.
Loose solder joints are also a widespread cause. Years of vibration and temperature fluctuations can create hairline cracks in solder connections, leading to intermittent contact or complete loss of signal transmission on the circuit board.
Infiltrating moisture can cause corrosion on the conductive traces and short circuits between components. Although the control unit is typically installed in a protected location, condensation over time can still damage the device.
Which vehicles are affected by error code 1515?
Error code 1515 is a very specific internal control unit fault that primarily affects Ford vehicles. In particular, the first generation of the Ford Focus is frequently impacted by this defect. At Airbag24, we specialize in repairing these specific control units.

In the next step, the faulty components are carefully removed from the circuit board and replaced with high-quality new parts. The circuit board is also cleaned of any corrosion or contaminants.
Upon completion of the repair, the control unit undergoes a comprehensive functional test to ensure proper operation. The repaired unit is then returned and can be reinstalled without any further programming. We provide a 12-month warranty on all repairs.
Is it worth repairing the control unit when error code 1515 appears?
Yes, repairing the airbag control unit is the most economical and sensible solution. It is significantly cheaper than purchasing a new part and safer than installing a used unit with an unknown history. Moreover, repair is sustainable and helps avoid unnecessary electronic waste.
Compared to a new part, which can quickly cost several hundred euros, repair offers substantial savings. Since error code 1515 is clearly caused by defective components, it can be permanently resolved by replacing those parts.
