What does error code 1728 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Typically, error code 1728 in airbag control units points to a malfunction in the sensor system or a communication issue. The system detects an irregularity that could jeopardize the proper deployment of airbags in an emergency and, as a safety precaution, activates the airbag warning light on the instrument panel.
As an OBD error code, 1728 is stored in the airbag control unit’s fault memory whenever the system’s self-diagnosis identifies an implausible value or a broken connection. This puts the entire restraint system into a passive, non-operational state.
Electronically, this means the control unit can no longer correctly process signals from one or more relevant sensors. A reliable decision regarding airbag deployment is therefore no longer guaranteed, prompting the system to deactivate preventively.
How do you recognize error code 1728?
The primary symptom of error code 1728 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the dashboard. Additionally, diagnostic tools may be unable to establish communication with the airbag control unit, and the stored fault cannot be cleared.
The continuously lit airbag warning light is the most obvious sign. Unlike usual, it does not extinguish after starting the vehicle but instead constantly alerts the driver to a fault in the safety system.
Another common feature is a communication failure during diagnostics. When a workshop attempts to read the fault memory using a scan tool, the airbag control unit fails to respond, indicating a serious internal fault.
Even if communication is possible, error code 1728 often cannot be permanently cleared. It reappears immediately after an attempt to erase it, suggesting a persistent hardware or connectivity problem.
What causes error code 1728?
The most frequent causes of error code 1728 include defects in the steering angle sensor, interruptions in the airbag ignition circuits, or general sensor connection faults. Internal electronic malfunctions within the control unit itself, as well as damage caused by water ingress, can also trigger this error.
Defects in the steering angle sensor are a specific cause, often occurring after work on the steering gear or steering column. In such cases, the control unit receives implausible data from this critical sensor.
A disruption in the ignition circuit indicates a faulty electrical connection to an airbag module or seatbelt pretensioner. This can result from cable breaks or corroded connectors.
General sensor connection errors are another common source. Especially in three-door vehicles, airbag connectors beneath the seats can become damaged due to constant movement. A defective coil spring on the steering wheel can also lead to connection issues.
Not infrequently, the root cause lies directly within the control unit. Internal electronic faults on the circuit board or moisture intrusion leading to short circuits can likewise generate error code 1728.
In which vehicles does error code 1728 occur?
Error code 1728 has been documented primarily in various models of the Peugeot brand. Particularly affected are several series and generations of the Peugeot 308, 2008, and 3008, including SW, GTI, and electric variants. Older models like the 306 may also be impacted.
