What does error code 17748 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code 17748 signifies a critical communication failure in the airbag control unit. The module can no longer communicate correctly with other vehicle systems or internal sensors. This results in the deactivation of the entire airbag system and a permanent warning message for the driver.
Technically, this error means that data exchange on the CAN bus or other communication lines has been interrupted. The control unit detects that it can no longer send or receive valid signals and, for safety reasons, switches to a passive, locked state. In this condition, the airbag function is no longer guaranteed.
The cause often lies in an internal hardware defect within the control unit itself, such as faulty components like the processor or memory. Consequently, this error typically cannot be resolved simply by clearing the fault memory, as the underlying physical or data‑related issue persists.
How do you recognize error 17748?
The main symptom of error 17748 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the error code cannot be cleared from the fault memory, indicating a persistent problem and ruling out a simple software malfunction.
The airbag warning light illuminates immediately after starting the engine and does not turn off. In some cases, it may also flash sporadically, suggesting a loose connection in the wiring or connectors.
When diagnosed using a professional workshop tester (e.g., VCDS, Delphi), error code 17748 will appear. A typical characteristic is that the command to clear the fault memory is either ignored by the control unit or the error reappears immediately after attempting to clear it.
Occasionally, alongside code 17748, additional errors related to CAN‑bus communication or specific sensors may also be stored, further aiding diagnosis.
What causes error code 17748?
The causes are varied, ranging from simple physical issues like loose connectors to complex internal hardware defects in the control unit. Overvoltage damage or crash data stored after an accident are also common culprits.
One of the most frequent causes is defective or loose connectors and damaged wiring. Particularly in three-door vehicles such as the Seat Ibiza Cupra Mk4, the cables and connectors beneath the seat can become damaged due to the frequent movement of the front seats.
Overvoltage damage is another major cause. These often result from improper jump-starting, the use of unsuitable chargers, or a faulty battery, potentially causing irreparable harm to sensitive electronic components within the control unit.
An internal fault in the control unit is also a primary cause. Components such as the central processor, the memory chip (EEPROM), or the voltage regulator on the circuit board may have failed. Water or moisture ingress leading to corrosion can likewise trigger such defects.

Error code 17748 primarily affects models from the Volkswagen Group, including various vehicles from Seat, VW, and Audi. Similar communication errors are also known in certain BMW and Mercedes-Benz series.
