What does error code 27 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 27 indicates a specific hardware fault in the ignition circuit of the passenger-side airbag. This particularly affects classic Porsche models such as the 911 (964, 993) and 944. The control unit has detected an issue in the triggering circuit, suggesting an open circuit, a short circuit, or incorrect resistance values.
The airbag control unit continuously monitors all ignition circuits of the pyrotechnic components. Error code 27 is stored whenever the electrical parameters of the passenger-side airbag’s ignition circuit fall outside the manufacturer-defined tolerances. For safety reasons, the system is then deactivated.
In more modern diagnostic systems, this manufacturer-specific error code often corresponds to the standardized DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B0027, confirming its association with ignition circuit 2 (passenger side).
How can you recognize error code 27?
The primary and unmistakable symptom is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. After starting the vehicle, the light fails to extinguish, indicating an active, safety-critical fault in the system. In this state, the airbag system is non-functional.
Additionally, when reading the fault memory with an appropriate diagnostic tool, error code 27 or B0027 will be explicitly displayed in the airbag control unit. Other functional impairments in the vehicle typically do not occur, as the fault is isolated to the airbag system.
What causes error code 27?
The main causes of error code 27 are physical defects in the passenger-side airbag’s triggering circuit. These include broken cables, corroded or loose connectors, and damaged airbag plugs. An internal electronic fault within the control unit itself can also trigger this error.
A common trigger is a defective or interrupted ignition circuit. This may result from mechanical damage, aging of cable insulation, or installation errors that disrupt the electrical current flow to the airbag initiator.
Poor connector contacts are another typical cause. Over time, vibrations or moisture can lead to contact issues at the airbag or control unit connectors, which the system registers as a fault.
In some cases, the defect lies directly within the control unit. Water damage, short circuits on the circuit board, damaged solder joints, or failure of individual electronic components can cause the ignition circuit to be incorrectly reported as faulty.
On which models does error code 27 appear?
This error code primarily occurs in classic Porsche vehicles from the late 1980s and 1990s. It especially affects various versions of the 911 and 944 series, where this generation of airbag control units was installed.

How is error code 27 professionally repaired?

First, the fault memory in the vehicle is read to confirm error code 27. Then, the control unit is removed; depending on the model, it is usually located in the center console, sometimes beneath the handbrake lever.

After successful repair, the control unit undergoes comprehensive testing, and the error code is erased. This reactivates the airbag system and restores road safety.
