What does error code 35 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 35 indicates a specific, internal fault within the airbag control unit (SRS). In most cases, this code points to a hardware issue with the control unit, such as defective electronic components on the circuit board. As a result, the control unit can no longer reliably perform its safety‑critical monitoring functions.
Technically speaking, the control unit’s internal self‑diagnostic system detects an implausible measurement or a failure of one of its components. This error is triggered to prevent malfunctions of the airbag system in the event of a crash. The system then switches to a safe, passive mode.
This fault cannot be resolved simply by clearing the fault memory, as the underlying hardware cause remains. Component‑level repair is therefore unavoidable.
How do you recognize error code 35?
The primary and most obvious symptom of error code 35 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the control unit may become unresponsive via the diagnostic interface (OBD), making it difficult to retrieve further fault details.
The airbag warning light illuminates immediately after starting the vehicle and does not turn off. This is a clear indication that the SRS has detected a critical fault and is no longer operational.
In some cases, communication with a diagnostic tool fails. When a workshop attempts to access the airbag control unit, no response is received, confirming that the fault lies deep within the device’s internal electronics rather than being superficial.
What causes error code 35?
The main cause of error code 35 is internal defects on the control unit’s circuit board. Common culprits include failed electronic components such as capacitors, resistors, or integrated circuits (ICs). Short circuits caused by moisture or overheating can also trigger this error.
First and foremost are age‑related failures of electronic components. Constant thermal and electrical stress over years leads to wear and tear on critical parts of the circuit board.
Another potential cause is short circuits or overheating. Penetrating moisture, contamination, or even mechanical damage to the housing can result in fine cracks on the circuit board or leakage currents, which in turn generate error code 35.
Rarely, communication issues within the vehicle’s CAN bus system or faulty connectors leading to the control unit may also trigger this error. In exceptional cases, software faults could play a role, though these are considerably less common compared to hardware defects.

Error code 35 is particularly frequently diagnosed in vehicles manufactured by Porsche. Specifically, the Porsche Boxster model from the 987 series, produced between 2004 and 2012, is well known for this particular airbag control unit error message.
