What does error code 39 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 39 indicates a critical internal hardware fault in the airbag control unit (SRS). This defect typically affects aging components such as capacitors on the circuit board. The control unit can no longer perform its internal self-tests correctly, leading to deactivation of the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, this error points to a malfunction within the control electronics. The control unit detects an irregularity in its own circuitry that prevents it from ensuring the safety system’s operational readiness. This is a classic issue, especially common in older vehicle generations.
The most frequent technical cause is the failure of capacitors—also known as “elkos”—on the main circuit board. Over time, these components lose their capacitance, resulting in an unstable power supply for the microprocessor and other critical components. Consequently, the control unit may fail to start up properly or lose communication.
In some cases, error code 39 may also indicate that crash data remains stored in the control unit’s memory after an accident, which cannot be erased due to the underlying hardware defect.
What symptoms appear with error code 39?
The most obvious symptom of error code 39 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the control unit may become inaccessible to diagnostic tools, making further troubleshooting via the OBD interface impossible.
The airbag warning light (SRS light) stays on after the engine starts and does not extinguish after a few seconds as usual. This is a direct indication from the vehicle that the restraint system is non-functional and would not deploy in the event of a crash.
Another typical sign is the lack of communication with the control unit. When attempting to read the fault memory using a diagnostic device, either no connection to the airbag control unit is established, or error code 39 appears as a permanent, non-erasable internal fault.
What causes error code 39?
The primary cause of error code 39 is the age-related wear of electronic components, particularly defective capacitors (elkos) on the circuit board. Other triggers include insufficient supply voltage, physical damage caused by moisture, or persistent crash data.
The most common reason is a pure hardware defect. Electrolytic capacitors mounted on the circuit board dry out over time, lose their electrical capacity, or swell. This leads to malfunctions in voltage regulation and disrupts the operation of the entire control unit.
An inadequate supply voltage—caused by a weak vehicle battery or a faulty alternator—can also result in internal errors within the control unit. The module registers the undervoltage and logs a permanent fault.
External factors such as short circuits, cable breaks in the wiring harness, or moisture damage from spilled liquids can likewise harm the sensitive electronics of the control unit and trigger this error code.
If crash data remains stored in the control unit’s memory after an accident while a hardware defect is present, these data often cannot be erased through standard procedures, again leading to error code 39.
