What does error code 44_70 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 44_70 indicates an internal, static hardware defect in the airbag control unit, specific to the Volkswagen Lupo 6X. This defect causes the airbag warning light to remain constantly illuminated, and the error cannot be cleared from the fault memory because the control unit is internally locked.
Technically, this error points to an irreversible malfunction on the control unit’s circuit board. It is not a temporary or software-related issue but rather a permanent failure of electronic components. The control unit detects this internal condition and enters a safety mode that disables the entire airbag system.
The result is that the control unit becomes unresponsive to diagnostic tools and can neither store new fault codes nor erase existing ones. The “static” status confirms that the underlying cause is persistent and can only be resolved through hardware repair.

What causes error code 44_70?
The primary cause of error code 44_70 is an internal hardware defect in the control electronics. Components on the circuit board are frequently damaged by overvoltage, moisture, aging, or thermal stress. Stored crash data can also trigger or accompany this error.
This static defect often arises from the failure of critical microelectronic components on the control unit’s printed circuit board. Such failures can occur even without a prior accident and are commonly due to material fatigue over time.
Although the error can appear without an accident, storing crash data is a frequent contributing factor. After a collision, the control unit locks up and requires professional reset. If error 44_70 persists afterward, it indicates an underlying hardware defect.
This error often occurs alongside codes 65535 (control unit defective), FFFF (component defective), or 44_B0 (internal/communication error). During diagnostics, code 18050 P1642 may also point to a malfunction in the airbag control unit.
