What does error code 5-00589 mean?
Error code 5-00589, often listed as 00589 or B1015, indicates excessively high resistance in the ignition circuit of the passenger-side airbag (N131). This suggests a broken wire, a defective igniter, or an internal fault within the airbag control unit. The system classifies the passenger-side airbag as non-functional and activates the warning light.
This error code points to a critical issue in the occupant protection system. The airbag control unit continuously monitors the integrity of all pyrotechnic ignition circuits by sending a minimal test current and measuring the resistance.
The target resistance value for the passenger-side airbag igniter (N131) typically ranges from 2.2 to 2.7 ohms. If the control unit detects a significantly higher value, it interprets this as a circuit break and stores error code 5-00589. This can be caused by a cable break, corrosion at connectors, or a defect in the igniter itself.
In some cases, the root cause lies directly within the control unit. An internal board defect—such as a faulty sensing component or a short circuit—can also trigger this error message.
How do you recognize error code 5-00589?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code 5-00589 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This light does not extinguish after starting the vehicle. A diagnosis using an appropriate diagnostic tool (e.g., VCDS) confirms the error and displays the exact description: "Resistance value too high."
Besides the active airbag warning light, there are no other noticeable effects on driving performance. The vehicle operates normally; however, the protective function of the airbag system—especially the passenger-side airbag—is no longer guaranteed.
In the event of an accident, the passenger-side airbag will fail to deploy under these fault conditions. This poses a significant safety risk and inevitably results in failure during the mandatory technical inspection (TÜV).
