What does error code 5343 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 5343 indicates that crash data has been permanently stored in the airbag control unit. Following a collision, the control unit locks itself to prevent unintended deployment. This “locked” state blocks the reactivation of the entire airbag system, even if all external components have already been repaired.
Technically speaking, after an impact detected by the crash sensors, a permanent entry is written into the control unit’s memory (often an EEPROM). This is a manufacturer‑specified safety measure designed to ensure that the system is inspected by a qualified workshop after a potentially damaging event.
This locked condition cannot be cleared using conventional diagnostic tools. The control unit remains in a defined fail-safe mode and refuses normal operation until the specific crash data is professionally removed. Therefore, this is not a typical component failure but rather a software‑triggered, permanent state.
How can you recognize error code 5343?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code 5343 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the fault memory cannot be cleared with standard workshop scanners because the error is recorded as “permanent” or “static.” As a result, the vehicle does not receive valid safety clearance.
The airbag warning light (SRS light) stays on after the engine starts and does not turn off as it normally would. This alerts the driver to a serious malfunction in the restraint system.
When reading the fault memory with a diagnostic tool such as TECH2 or another OBD scanner, error code 5343 appears clearly. Any attempt to clear this error fails—the code reappears immediately since the underlying cause (the stored data) persists.
What causes error code 5343?
The sole and most common cause of error code 5343 is a prior accident or severe impact that triggered the crash sensors. This results in crash data being saved in the control unit’s memory. In rare cases, major hardware defects—such as water damage or internal short circuits—can also lead to a locked state.
The primary cause is the storage of crash data. Even if no airbags deployed during an impact, the energy of the collision may still activate the sensors and put the control unit into the locked state. This applies even after all visible vehicle damage has been repaired.
Secondary factors may include hardware malfunctions on the control unit’s circuit board. Water damage or a short circuit could impair internal components so severely that the unit reports an irreparable internal error or blocks communication, which might manifest as errors like U1XXX.
Which vehicles are affected by error code 5343?
