What does error code 602 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 602 is a specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates a fault within the airbag system. It typically points to an issue in the electrical peripherals, such as cable connections, sensors, or the seatbelt pretensioner. The control unit detects an inconsistency and activates the SRS warning light because the full functionality of the restraint system can no longer be guaranteed.
Technically speaking, this error is stored in the airbag control unit’s (SRS module) fault memory whenever a monitored circuit reports an unacceptable value. This could be an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to voltage.
The control unit continuously performs self-tests. If it detects such an anomaly, it places the system into a passive state for safety reasons, preventing unintended deployment and alerting the driver.
How do you recognize error code 602?
The most obvious symptom of error code 602 is the permanently or intermittently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS symbol) on the instrument cluster. This warning remains active even after the engine starts, indicating that the airbag system is either disabled or its function is impaired. Reading the fault memory confirms code 602.
The illuminated SRS warning light is a critical safety signal. It must not be ignored, as in the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may fail to deploy.
In some cases, accompanying messages may also appear on the vehicle’s display. However, a reliable diagnosis is only possible by reading the fault memory using an appropriate diagnostic tool, such as an iCarsoft POR V1.0, Bosch KTS, or Gutmann Tester.
What causes error code 602?
The causes of error code 602 are varied and usually lie in the electrical domain. Common issues include faulty cable connections, corroded connectors, or shorts in the wiring leading to components like seatbelt pretensioners or sensors. Defective sensors themselves, or an internal fault in the airbag control unit—often due to moisture ingress—can also trigger this error.
Problems with the wiring often come first. Loose contacts at connectors linking to the seatbelt pretensioner, the seat occupancy sensor, or directly to the airbag module are typical sources of failure.
A short circuit or an open circuit within the wiring harness—for example, caused by mechanical damage during a previous repair—can likewise result in this error code.
Defective sensors are another frequent cause. A malfunctioning seat occupancy sensor, a faulty airbag sensor, or a non‑functioning seatbelt pretensioner send incorrect readings to the control unit, leading to the storage of error code 602.
Rarer but more serious is a defect within the airbag control unit itself. Moisture ingress can cause corrosion and short circuits on the circuit board, while aging or a prior airbag deployment may damage the device.
Especially in the Porsche Macan, code 602 may occur alongside other DTCs such as B0001 (airbag control unit defective), B0002 (airbag sensor defective), B0003 (seatbelt pretensioner defective), B0004 (seat occupancy sensor defective), or B0005 (airbag wiring defective).
