What does error code 67 on the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 67 indicates a critical internal hardware fault in the airbag control unit. This defect affects the central processing unit and prevents the control unit from performing its safety functions. It is a severe issue that results in the deactivation of the entire airbag system and cannot be resolved by simply clearing the error.
Technically, this error is classified as an internal control unit fault. This means that one or more electronic components on the circuit board—such as microprocessors or memory chips—are no longer functioning correctly. The system detects this inconsistent state and shuts down for safety reasons.
In certain vehicles, such as the BMW 7 Series (E38), this fault cycle is documented as errors 67–72. This numbering suggests a range of possible internal defects, all stemming from a fundamental malfunction of the control unit’s hardware.
How can you recognize error code 67?
The main symptom of error code 67 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster that cannot be reset. In some cases, the light may also flash sporadically during driving. Another clear indication is that diagnostic tools often fail to establish communication with the airbag control unit.
The continuously lit airbag light serves as the primary warning signal for the driver, indicating that the entire restraint system—including airbags and seatbelt pretensioners—is inoperable in the event of a crash.

The most common cause is a malfunction of the internal electronics. Aging components, cold solder joints, or microscopic cracks on the circuit board can disrupt circuit functionality and trigger the error code.
Problems with the control unit’s power supply—whether due to external influences or internal defects in the board’s power‑supply section—are another widespread cause. Unstable voltages can damage sensitive microchips.
Infiltrating moisture leads to corrosion on delicate electronic components and circuit traces, potentially causing short circuits or broken connections that are interpreted as internal error code 67.
In rarer cases, issues with the steering wheel’s clockspring or damaged wiring in the airbag system can also result in electrical disturbances that harm the control unit and secondarily trigger error code 67.
Which vehicles are affected by error code 67?
Error code 67 primarily occurs in older vehicle generations whose control units feature specific hardware architectures. The Porsche 911 of the 996 series is particularly prone to this issue. Similarly, in the BMW 7 Series E38, this fault cycle is well known under codes 67–72.
