What does error code 70 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 70 indicates a specific internal malfunction within the airbag control unit. This error typically results in the unit being locked, thereby disabling the entire airbag system. The cause is often stored crash data or an internal electronic fault that blocks communication and functionality.
Technically speaking, this is a condition where the control unit locks itself for safety reasons. Such errors frequently occur in specific control units, such as those installed in the Porsche Boxster S 987.
The consequence is complete deactivation of the airbag system, posing a significant safety risk. In this state, the control unit can no longer manage connected sensors and airbags or trigger them in the event of a crash.
A clear indication of this condition is the inability to communicate via the diagnostic interface. Workshops can no longer read the fault memory because the control unit no longer responds to requests.
How do you recognize error code 70?
The main symptom of error code 70 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the airbag control unit cannot be accessed with a diagnostic tool; there is no communication. This confirms the complete deactivation of the safety system.
The airbag warning light illuminates immediately after starting the engine and does not turn off. This unambiguously signals to the driver a critical fault in the restraint system requiring immediate attention.
Another crucial symptom for workshops is the complete failure of diagnostic communication. When attempting to access the airbag control unit with a tester, the connection fails. The unit is essentially “offline” and can neither send nor receive data.
What causes error code 70?
The primary cause of error code 70 is crash data stored in the control unit. After an accident or malfunction, this data locks the unit. Another possible cause is connectivity issues in wiring or connectors, leading to internal error entries.
After an accident—or sometimes due to a malfunction—so‑called crash data is written into the control unit’s internal memory (EEPROM). These data are permanent and cannot be erased using standard diagnostic tools. They put the control unit into a locked state, forcing a full system check.
Although less common, peripheral problems can also trigger the error. Unstable power supply or loose connections at the control unit’s connectors may result in internal faults that likewise lock the device.
Which vehicles are affected by error code 70?
