What does error code 8002 on the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 8002 indicates a general yet critical internal fault in the airbag control unit. It usually points to hardware damage, such as memory or overvoltage issues, a short circuit caused by water ingress, or a blockage due to stored crash data. The control unit can no longer guarantee its safety functions.
This error code is set by the system when self-diagnosis detects an inconsistency or defect on the circuit board. The control unit is the central component that processes signals from impact sensors, detects seat occupancy, and deploys airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash.
An active error 8002 results in immediate deactivation of the airbag system and illumination of the warning light to alert the driver. A professional diagnosis is essential to pinpoint the exact source of the fault at the electronic level.
How do you recognize error code 8002?
The most obvious symptom is a continuously illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. A frequent culprit is moisture entering the control unit housing, causing corrosion and short circuits on the circuit board. This leads to an irreparable internal condition that the device logs as error 8002.
Damaged cables or defective connectors—common in three-door vehicles due to constant seat movement—can disrupt communication and provoke an internal fault. Likewise, the steering wheel coil spring is a known weak point owing to continuous mechanical stress.
