What does error code 8058 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 8058, often also indicated as B8058, signals a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit. This defect typically affects the memory chips or internal modules of the control unit. As a result, the control unit can no longer guarantee its safety‑related functions, leading to deactivation of the airbag system and permanent illumination of the warning light.
Technically speaking, this is an internal hardware or memory error. During self‑diagnosis, the control unit detects an inconsistency or malfunction in its own electronic components, such as the memory chips (EEPROM) or the control logic. This condition prevents proper processing of sensor signals and activation of the airbags in the event of a crash.
Due to its critical safety implications, the system switches to an emergency operating mode when this error occurs. This means that airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are usually deactivated until the fault is resolved. Simply clearing the error code with a diagnostic tool is usually not sufficient, as the underlying hardware defect persists.
