What does error code 85-4x mean?
Error code 85-4x indicates a critical fault in the airbag control unit, specifically related to the OPDS (Occupant Position Detection System). The system has a problem with seat occupancy detection, which is essential for correctly activating and deploying the airbags in an emergency and compromises overall system safety.
The OPDS is responsible for accurately detecting the position and occupancy of the front passenger seat. This information is crucial so that the airbag control unit can determine whether and at what intensity an airbag should be deployed.
A fault in this system, as indicated by code 85-4x, results in the control unit no longer receiving reliable data. As a safety precaution, the entire airbag system is typically deactivated to prevent unintended deployment.
How do you recognize error code 85-4x?
The most obvious symptom of error 85-4x is a permanently illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light (SRS symbol) on the instrument panel. Additional signs include communication issues with diagnostic tools and the inability to erase crash data stored in the control unit after an accident.
The SRS warning light directly informs the driver that there is a safety‑related issue within the restraint system. It should never be ignored.

What causes error 85-4x?
