What does error code 85-64 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 85-64 indicates a specific fault in the electronic control of the airbag system. It occurs particularly frequently in Honda models and often points to issues with the seat occupancy detection system (OPDS) or an internal control unit error that leads to deactivation of the entire airbag system.
Technically, this error code suggests that the airbag control unit (ECU) has detected an anomaly in its internal circuits or in communication with critical sensors, such as the seat occupancy mat. The system classifies this condition as safety-critical and shuts down preventively to avoid false deployment of the airbags.
The cause may be either a permanent hardware defect on the circuit board or crash data stored after an accident, which puts the control unit into a locked state. In both cases, the protective function of the airbag system is no longer guaranteed.

Other symptoms are usually not observed, as the error does not directly affect the functionality of other vehicle systems. However, the sole deactivation of the airbag system already poses a significant safety risk and results in failure during the main inspection (TÜV).
What causes error code 85-64?
The main causes of error 85-64 are varied. First and foremost are crash data permanently stored after an accident. Additional reasons include electronic damage to the control unit caused by moisture, short circuits, or defective components, as well as faults in peripheral devices such as the seat occupancy mat (OPDS).
After a crash, the control unit stores non-erasable crash data. These must be reset using specialized equipment, as simple clearing via OBD2 diagnostics is insufficient to unlock the module.
