What does error code 9007 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 9007 indicates a specific fault in the driver’s airbag ignition circuit, more precisely in the stage‑1 deployment control. The control unit has detected an electrical anomaly—such as a short circuit, an open circuit, or an implausible resistance—in the circuit leading to the driver’s airbag. Alternatively, this code may also signify that a crash event has occurred and the deployment has been logged.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit (SRS module) continuously monitors the resistance of all ignition circuits. If the measured value in the driver’s airbag circuit deviates from the specified threshold, error 9007 is set. This is a safety‑critical condition that results in deactivating the affected components to prevent unintended deployment.
Especially in Renault and Dacia vehicles, this error code clearly points to a problem along the path from the control unit, through the wiring harness and the coil spring in the steering wheel, to the ignition pellet inside the airbag module itself. The root cause is not necessarily in the control unit but often lies in the peripheral components.
How can you recognize error 9007?
The primary and unmistakable symptom is the permanently illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, some models may display a general warning message such as “SERVICE.” This indicates that the vehicle’s passive safety system is not fully functional and, in the event of a crash, the airbags might fail to deploy.
The airbag warning light does not extinguish after starting the vehicle as usual; instead, it remains constantly lit to alert the driver to the safety‑related defect. Clearing the fault memory without addressing the underlying issue typically results in the error being re‑recorded immediately.
As a consequence of this fault, the driver’s airbag—and often the associated seatbelt pretensioner—are disabled. In this state, the vehicle no longer provides full occupant protection, making prompt diagnosis and repair essential.
What causes error code 9007?
The most common cause of error code 9007 is not the control unit itself but problems with the wiring. These include airbags that have deployed following a crash, faulty connectors (especially under the seats), a broken coil spring in the steering wheel, or a malfunctioning seatbelt pretensioner. Only when these external factors have been ruled out does an internal defect in the control unit become a possibility.
A very common weak point in Renault and Dacia models is corroded or loose connectors beneath the driver’s or passenger’s seat. Even minor seat movements can lead to contact issues, causing the control unit to register an open circuit or incorrect resistance in the ignition circuit.
The coil spring, also known as the slip ring, in the steering wheel is another classic wear component. It establishes the electrical connection to the airbag housed within the steering wheel. Frequent steering motions can cause the flat ribbon cable inside to break, resulting in an interruption of the ignition circuit.
Following a crash in which the airbag has deployed, the control unit stores so‑called crash data. In such cases, it will also report error 9007 because the ignition circuit was interrupted during deployment. The control unit is then often marked as “irreversible” and must be professionally reset.
Rarely, the cause lies in an internal hardware defect of the airbag control unit—such as defective solder joints or other electronic components on the circuit board that affect the driver’s ignition circuit.

Error code 9007 is characteristic of vehicles from the Renault and Dacia groups. It is particularly frequently diagnosed in the control units of models like the Dacia Logan, where identical SRS systems and components are commonly used.
