What does error code 92 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 92 indicates a serious internal hardware defect in the airbag control unit (SRS/ACSM). The cause almost always lies in faulty electronic components on the circuit board, such as aging capacitors or defective memory chips. For safety reasons, the control unit locks itself, the airbag warning light remains permanently illuminated, and the error cannot be cleared without physically repairing the electronics.
Technically speaking, error 92 is a self-diagnostic code generated by the control unit, indicating that its internal functionality can no longer be guaranteed. This is not merely a software or communication issue, but rather a sign of a specific physical defect. Often, it is electrolytic capacitors (elkos) that lose their capacitance or leak over time. This results in unstable voltages on the circuit board, which in turn can lead to data loss in memory or failure of the microprocessor.
Once this critical error is detected, the system switches to a safe but inactive state. This means that airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will no longer deploy in the event of a crash. Clearing the fault memory using a diagnostic tool is futile, as the hardware defect will be detected again with every start-up cycle.
How do you recognize error code 92?
The main symptom of error code 92 is the airbag warning light that stays constantly illuminated in the instrument cluster. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle. Reading out the fault memory confirms the entry "92 - Internal Error," which cannot be permanently erased. In some cases, communication with the control unit may also be lost.
The most obvious sign is the persistently lit airbag warning light. Unlike sporadic errors where the light occasionally turns on and off, with error 92 it remains steadily on. This signals a permanent, safety-critical defect in the system.
When diagnosing with workshop testers such as ISTA, INPA, or Gutmann, error code 92 is clearly identified as an "internal control unit error." Attempts to clear the fault memory usually fail, as the underlying hardware issue persists and the code reappears immediately.
Another symptom may be a complete loss of communication with the airbag control unit. The diagnostic tool can no longer establish a connection, further complicating troubleshooting—but strongly suggesting a total failure of the internal electronics.
What causes error code 92?
The primary cause of error code 92 is a hardware defect on the circuit board of the airbag control unit. Most commonly, this involves age-related failures of electrolytic capacitors (elkos). Other causes include overvoltage damage from jump-starts, defective memory chips (EEPROM), or corrosion due to moisture ingress.
Defective capacitors are the most frequent source of failure. These components age, dry out, and lose their ability to maintain stable voltage levels. The result is voltage fluctuations that disrupt the processor and memory of the control unit, triggering internal error 92.
Overvoltage damage can occur from improper jump-start procedures, connecting unsuitable chargers, or voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system. Sensitive components on the circuit board can suffer irreparable damage, leading to an internal error.
Memory faults or blocked crash data can also trigger the error. If the internal memory chip (EEPROM) is damaged by a hardware defect, the control unit can no longer correctly read or write operational data, causing it to lock itself and report error 92.
Infiltration of moisture—often through leaks in the vehicle body—leads to corrosion on the circuit board. Fine conductive traces are destroyed, resulting in short circuits that ultimately cause the control unit to fail and store error code 92.
Which vehicles experience error code 92?
Error code 92 is a well-known defect that primarily affects control units manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. Modern, complex models such as the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT X290 4-door coupé (model years 2018 to present) are particularly susceptible to this specific internal control unit error.
