What does error code 922 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 922 indicates a defective, non‑functioning, or improperly communicating airbag control unit. Often, the cause lies in internal hardware defects that prevent proper operation. In such cases, the control unit is either locked—frequently due to stored crash data—or it no longer responds to diagnostic requests.
Technically, error 922 means the control unit has diagnosed itself as “faulty or non‑functional.” This may point to a severe internal defect, where electronic components on the circuit board—such as microprocessors or memory chips—are damaged. In this state, the control unit can no longer ensure its safety functions.
The system either stores non‑erasable crash data that prevents reactivation, or communication via the diagnostic interface is completely severed. In many instances, this error is accompanied by the generic code 65535 (control unit defective), indicating an irreparable internal fault requiring specialized repair.
How do you recognize error code 922?
Typical symptoms of error code 922 include a permanently illuminated airbag warning light and the inability to access the control unit with a diagnostic tool. Often, crash data remains stored in memory and cannot be cleared using standard methods, or the vehicle identification number is missing from the control unit’s data record.
The most obvious sign is the continuously lit airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, signaling a critical, persistent fault in the restraint system.
Another clear symptom is complete loss of communication. Workshops are unable to connect their diagnostic equipment to the airbag control unit to read or clear errors; the unit fails to respond to queries.
In some cases, erroneous or damaged sensor readings—such as those from seat occupancy sensors—are transmitted even though the sensors themselves are intact. This suggests that signal processing within the control unit is disrupted.
What causes error code 922?
The primary cause of error code 922 is internal hardware failure within the control unit, often resulting from short circuits, voltage surges, or aging of electronic components. Other contributing factors include physical damage from accidents or moisture ingress, as well as faulty sensors, cable breaks, or issues with the device’s coding.
Internal control unit defects are the most common cause. Short circuits, voltage spikes, or sustained under‑voltage conditions—caused, for example, by a weak vehicle battery or a malfunctioning alternator—can damage sensitive SMD components or the microcontroller on the circuit board.
Physical damage also plays a role. An accident can not only store crash data but also mechanically damage the control unit itself. Liquid intrusion is particularly problematic for control units installed beneath seats or in the footwell.
The peripheral components can also be responsible. Faulty sensors in the airbag system, broken cables, or loose connectors lead to persistent error messages that the control unit interprets as a serious defect.
Rarely, incorrect coding or software issues within the control unit itself may trigger the error. Error 922 is often accompanied by additional codes, such as the generic defect code 65535 (control unit defective) or a general message like “no communication.”
Which vehicles are affected by error code 922?
Error code 922 is especially prevalent in older Volkswagen models. The most commonly affected are the VW Polo I (Type 86) and its successor, the VW Polo Mk2 (Type 6N/6N2). At Airbag24, we specialize in repairing control units for these and similar vehicles.
