What does error code 930949 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 930949 indicates a critical short circuit to ground in the driver-side knee airbag circuit. This fault is stored in the Airbag Control and Safety Module (ACSM) of the BMW 4 Series G23 Cabrio and points to an electrical issue caused either by wiring, connectors, or an internal defect on the control module’s circuit board itself.
Technically, the monitoring electronics in the ACSM detect that the knee airbag signal line has an unintended connection to the vehicle’s chassis. This condition is classified as hazardous because, in the event of a crash, it could prevent or impair proper airbag deployment.
The control module then places the affected component—and often the entire restraint system—in a safe, passive state to avoid malfunctions. The fault remains permanently logged in the fault memory and cannot be cleared without addressing the underlying hardware issue.
How do you recognize error 930949?
The primary symptom of error 930949 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, communication problems with the airbag control module may occur, making it impossible or unreliable to read or clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool. The entire airbag system enters a safety‑mode state, which can result in deactivation of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners.
The most noticeable sign is the red airbag warning light that fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle—this is a clear indication of a safety‑critical system fault.
In the workshop, connecting to the airbag control module via an OBD2 diagnostic tool is often disrupted. Attempts to clear the fault code fail because the error is recorded as “permanent” or “static” and reappears immediately.
