What does error code 93A0 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code 93A0 signifies a general fault in the airbag ignition circuit system. The control unit has detected an electrical irregularity in one of the ignition circuits for airbags or seatbelt pretensioners. This is a safety-critical fault that compromises the deployment function of the restraint system and results in deactivation of the affected circuit.
The airbag control unit continuously monitors the ignition circuits for correct resistance values and voltage levels. Any deviation—whether caused by a short circuit, an open circuit, or incorrect resistance—is recognized as a fault and logged in the fault memory as code 93A0 or a more specific code.
This general fault may be accompanied by more specific codes that pinpoint the exact location of the issue. Examples include 93AB (passenger-side ignition circuit), 93B4 (driver-side ignition circuit), or 93A9 (driver-side seatbelt pretensioner circuit). Other errors such as 92E0 (coding error) or 93F9 (voltage error) point to different problems within the system environment.
How can you identify error code 93A0?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code 93A0 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Unlike normal operation, this light does not extinguish after a few seconds upon starting the vehicle. In some cases, messages displayed on the driver information screen may also indicate a malfunction in the restraint system.
Once this fault is active, the airbag system is either fully or partially disabled. In the event of a crash, affected components such as airbags or seatbelt pretensioners will not deploy, posing a significant safety risk.

What causes error code 93A0?
The causes of error code 93A0 typically lie in the electrical peripherals of the airbag control unit. Common issues include poor connector contacts, corroded connections, or cable breaks—often found near the seats or at the steering wheel’s coil spring. Internal defects within the control unit itself, such as water ingress, can also trigger this error.
One of the most frequent sources of failure is mechanical problems with connector contacts. Loose or corroded contacts at the airbag connectors—often located beneath the seats—can create high contact resistance. Particularly in three-door vehicles, repeated seat movements lead to wear on cables and connectors.
Another typical cause is a defective coil spring (also known as a slip ring) behind the steering wheel. Since this component is stressed with every steering movement, the delicate internal conductive traces may break, interrupting the ignition circuit to the driver’s airbag.
Rarer but more severe are electronic faults directly within the control unit. Water ingress can cause short circuits on the circuit board. Similarly, internal driver modules or other electronic components may fail, generating error messages.
