What does error code 93F6 mean?
Error code 93F6 indicates an internal fault in the airbag control unit, where a predefined deployment threshold has been exceeded. This typically occurs after a crash event but can also result from electrical faults such as overvoltage or water damage. The control unit locks itself internally and stores irreversible crash data, causing the airbag warning light to remain illuminated permanently.
Technically, the control unit monitors acceleration and deceleration values via its sensors. When these values surpass a system‑defined threshold, the event is interpreted as a crash. The system records this state to prevent tampering and mandate a diagnostic check.
Once error code 93F6 is set, the control unit enters a safety mode. It can no longer perform its primary function of managing restraint systems. Simply clearing the fault memory using standard diagnostic tools is no longer possible in this case.
How do you recognize error code 93F6?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code 93F6 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. It does not turn off after the vehicle is started. In many cases, once this error is set, the control unit becomes inaccessible or only partially accessible to standard diagnostic equipment.
The persistent warning light serves as a critical alert, indicating that the entire airbag system is disabled and will provide no protective function in the event of another accident. Passenger safety is therefore no longer guaranteed.
Additionally, the diagnostic tool may successfully establish a connection with the vehicle but still be unable to access the airbag control unit specifically. It often reports errors such as “control unit unresponsive” or displays error code 93F6 as non‑erasable.
What causes error 93F6?
The main cause of error 93F6 is the storage of crash data following an accident. Other triggers include electrical disturbances like overvoltage caused by a faulty battery or improper chargers, as well as moisture ingress leading to corrosion and short circuits on the circuit board. Defective external sensors or cables can also provoke this error.
A crash event is the most common reason. Even what appears to be a minor incident or a severe impact—such as a strong blow against the vehicle body—can exceed the deployment threshold and trigger crash data recording.
Overvoltage is another critical factor. An attempted jump-start with reversed polarity, a defective alternator, or the use of unsuitable battery chargers can destroy sensitive electronic components within the control unit, such as voltage regulators or processors.
Water damage, often resulting from leaking seals or clogged drainage channels, leads to corrosion on the control unit’s circuit board. This causes leakage currents and short circuits, which can likewise result in an internal fault and error code 93F6.
Often, this error does not occur in isolation. Accompanying codes such as 93F9 (energy reserve power supply), 93FC (control unit – low voltage supply), or 93A8 (airbag control unit defective) point to a more extensive issue with the power supply or the control unit itself.
Which vehicles are affected by error 93F6?
