What does error code 9602 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 9602 indicates a “Driver Airbag Coherence Error Level 2.” This means the airbag control unit has detected an inconsistency in the driver airbag circuit that, while present as a fault, is not properly configured within the system. This results in a permanent fault condition and a continuously illuminated warning light.
Technically speaking, the control unit constantly compares the expected electrical values of the driver airbag ignition circuit with the values actually measured. A coherence error occurs when these values are implausible—neither corresponding to a clear short circuit nor an open circuit, but instead representing a logical contradiction in the system’s integrity.
This internal fault status puts the module into a safety mode to prevent erroneous deployment. Consequently, the airbag warning light remains permanently illuminated. For diagnosis, manufacturer-specific systems such as those from Bosch or Gutmann are essential, as standard OBD-II scanners often cannot correctly interpret this fault or establish communication with the locked control unit.
How can you recognize error code 9602?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code 9602 is the permanently lit airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This light does not extinguish after the vehicle is started. Additionally, the control unit may become unreadable by standard diagnostic tools because it is in a locked state.
The persistent warning light is a clear indication that the entire airbag system is disabled. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will not deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
Another technical symptom is the aforementioned refusal to communicate. Attempts to access the control unit with universal diagnostic tools often fail, as the internal fault blocks regular diagnostic protocols. Only advanced diagnostic systems can force a connection and retrieve the specific error code 9602.
What causes error code 9602?
The main cause of error 9602 is an internal logic conflict within the airbag control unit, frequently triggered by stored crash data following an accident. Other potential causes include defects in external components such as seat occupancy mats, coil springs, or sensors, whose faulty signals can cause the coherence check in the control unit to fail.
Stored crash data is the most common culprit. After an airbag deployment or a significant impact, the control unit locks itself to prevent uncontrolled secondary deployments. This condition is often interpreted as a coherence error and can only be resolved through professional memory reprogramming.
Even though the fault refers specifically to the driver airbag, peripheral components—such as a defective coil spring (slip ring) in the steering wheel—can also be responsible. Variable or implausible resistance in this component generates signals that the control unit classifies as incoherence. The use of simulators or resistors to bypass the issue is strictly prohibited, as it compromises safety and may result in the loss of vehicle operating approval.
