What does error code 9604 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 9604 indicates a critical coherence error in the airbag system. It means that an error has been detected in the passenger-side airbag of stage 2, but this component is neither properly configured nor correctly controlled. This points to a serious mismatch or communication failure between the central control unit and the passenger-side airbag, resulting in the deactivation of the entire safety system.
Technically speaking, the error definition reads: "Error present in passenger-side airbag stage 2, but not configured: coherence error." The airbag control unit—the system's central control module—cannot correctly process or reconcile signals from this specific airbag stage.
As the brain of the safety system, the control unit is responsible for processing all sensor signals, activating the airbag warning light when errors occur, and ensuring proper deployment of airbags in the event of a crash. A coherence error such as 9604 disrupts this chain and renders the system inoperable.
What symptoms indicate error code 9604?
The primary sign of error code 9604 is a continuously or intermittently illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument panel. Additionally, the entire airbag system becomes inoperative, and communication issues with the control unit may arise during diagnostics. Consequently, the vehicle will fail the main inspection (HU).
The most obvious symptom is the active airbag warning light, clearly signaling to the driver that there is a severe problem with the restraint system and that its protective function is no longer guaranteed.
Another clear indication is the complete deactivation of the airbag system. In the event of a crash, neither the passenger-side airbag nor any other airbags or seatbelt pretensioners will deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
During workshop diagnostics, it may be impossible to establish communication between the diagnostic tool and the components of the passenger-side airbag. In some cases, stored crash data cannot even be erased, suggesting a blocked state of the control unit.
Due to the active error code, the vehicle is ineligible for the main inspection (HU). The defect is classified as major and prevents the issuance of the inspection sticker.

A thorough visual inspection of cables and connectors—especially the airbag connectors beneath the seat—is often the first step. Corrosion, loose connections, or cable breaks caused by frequent seat adjustments can disrupt communication.
The coil spring on the steering wheel, which is stressed with every steering movement, is another component that can wear out and cause interruptions—even if the error primarily affects the passenger-side airbag.
Another potential trigger is water entering the control unit itself. Moisture can cause short circuits on the circuit board and permanently damage the sensitive electronics.
Defective sensors, particularly the passenger-side seat occupancy sensor, can also send inconsistent signals to the control unit. If the system fails to accurately detect weight on the seat, this may result in configuration errors like code 9604.
It is crucial to avoid unsafe repair methods such as using airbag simulators or resistors. Such manipulations are life-threatening and will void the vehicle’s operating permit.
