What does error code 9660 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 9660 points to a critical internal hardware failure in the airbag control unit (SRS). Typically, the cause lies in damaged electronic components on the circuit board, such as capacitors or ICs, or in stored crash data that locks the module. The control unit can no longer perform its safety functions, resulting in deactivation of the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, this error means the control unit’s self-diagnosis has detected an irreparable internal condition. This may be triggered by physical damage to the hardware—such as defective solder joints—or by moisture-induced short circuits. Likewise, voltage spikes or persistent under-voltage can harm the sensitive electronics and trigger this permanent fault.
The control unit then enters a safety mode to prevent unintended airbag deployments. In this state, communication via the OBD2 interface is often impossible, and simply clearing the fault memory proves futile since the underlying hardware issue persists.
How do you recognize error code 9660?
The main symptom of error 9660 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light (SRS symbol) in the instrument cluster. Additionally, the airbag control unit often becomes unresponsive to diagnostic tools, indicating that the entire restraint system—including airbags and seatbelt pretensioners—is out of service.
The airbag warning light is the most obvious sign. It fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle, signaling a permanent, safety-critical fault requiring immediate attention.
Another clear indication is that workshops cannot establish communication with the airbag module using their diagnostic equipment. The unit does not respond to requests, making further diagnosis or clearing faults via the OBD2 interface impossible.
The fault memory may contain specific entries such as “Crash Data Stored,” “Internal Error,” or “No Communication,” reinforcing suspicion of a severe defect within the control unit itself.
What causes error code 9660?
The most common cause of error code 9660 is internal hardware failure, including damaged components like capacitors or integrated circuits (ICs) on the circuit board. Another major factor is stored crash data following an accident, which permanently locks the control unit. Voltage issues or short circuits can also damage the electronics.
Internal hardware damage is the primary source of the problem. Over time, electronic components may degrade or fail due to external factors such as vibrations and temperature fluctuations, leading to malfunctions in the control unit’s internal logic.
Stored crash data is another frequent culprit. After an accident—or even a strong impact, such as a door slamming shut—the control unit may register a crash event and lock itself. This condition is permanent and can only be reset through specialized intervention.
Voltage problems in the vehicle’s electrical system, caused by a faulty battery or alternator, can result in over- or under-voltage. These fluctuations are harmful to the control unit’s delicate microelectronics and may cause irreversible damage.
Other possible—but less common—causes include corroded connectors or loose contacts, as well as software or firmware errors that may arise after improper diagnostic procedures.
