What does error code 99 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 99 indicates a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit. This typically points to a hardware defect, such as issues with memory chips or other electronic components. The control unit is locked and requires professional electronic repair.
Technically speaking, this error means that the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis has detected an anomaly that prevents the entire airbag system from functioning correctly. In this state, the device can no longer deploy airbags or activate seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash.
This error code is often directly linked to stored crash data following an accident or to a defect in the internal electronics. Simply clearing the fault memory using a diagnostic tool will be ineffective, as the underlying cause lies within the unit itself.
Especially for certain part numbers—such as “99” in Jaguar models—this error is a well-known case requiring specialized repair, where the control unit’s hardware is analyzed and defective components replaced.

Typically, the vehicle’s fault memory does not store additional errors related to external components like sensors or wiring. The focus is clearly on the control unit itself, which reports an “internal fault.”
What causes error code 99?
The main cause of error code 99 is an internal hardware defect in the airbag control unit. Often, crash data from a previous airbag deployment is stored in the unit’s memory, locking it out. Other causes include defective electronic components due to aging, moisture, or short circuits.
A very common cause is the storage of crash data. After an accident in which airbags or seatbelt pretensioners have deployed, the control unit writes this information into a non-erasable memory area (EEPROM) and locks itself. This is a manufacturer‑imposed safety measure.
Electronics damage is also a frequent culprit. Moisture ingress, voltage fluctuations in the vehicle’s electrical system, or a short circuit can irreparably damage sensitive components such as microprocessors or memory chips on the control unit’s circuit board, triggering this error.
In rare cases, faulty external sensors may also lead to internal malfunctions ultimately interpreted as internal error 99. However, most often the defect originates directly in the control unit’s hardware itself.
