What does error code B0030 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B0030 is a specific body‑code (B‑Code) of the On‑Board Diagnostics system (OBD‑II), signaling a serious fault in the vehicle’s safety system. It typically indicates a malfunction in the activation circuitry for the left second‑row side airbag or a general internal hardware failure within the airbag control unit itself.
The airbag control unit, also known as the SRS module (Supplemental Restraint System), SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module), or RCM (Restraint Control Module), serves as the central control unit for all passive safety systems. It continuously monitors all sensors, ignition circuits, and internal components.
When error code B0030 appears, the control unit has detected an electrical or logical fault. This could involve issues with the microcontroller, memory chip, or communication with a specific airbag module. As a result, the affected airbag functions are deactivated for safety reasons, and the SRS warning light illuminates.
How can you recognize error code B0030?
The most obvious symptom of error code B0030 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light (SRS light) on the instrument panel. This clearly alerts the driver that the airbag system is not fully operational. Often, the error cannot be permanently cleared using a standard diagnostic tool.
In many cases, the internal defect triggering B0030 also results in a complete loss of communication. This means the workshop can no longer access the airbag control unit via diagnostic equipment to retrieve additional details or clear the fault memory.
Since the system is disabled when this error occurs, the protective function of the airbags is no longer guaranteed. In the event of a crash, the airbags might fail to deploy or deploy incorrectly, posing a significant safety risk to occupants.
What causes error code B0030?
The most common cause of error code B0030 is an internal hardware failure within the airbag control unit itself. These include electronic damage due to aging, moisture, or short circuits. Another major cause is stored crash data following an accident, which locks the control unit. Less frequently, external wiring issues or faulty sensors may be responsible.
First and foremost are electronic defects on the control unit’s circuit board. Components such as microcontrollers, memory chips, or capacitors can fail, preventing proper operation. Such damage often develops gradually over time due to vibrations and temperature fluctuations.
After an airbag deployment or a significant impact, so‑called crash data is permanently stored in the control unit’s memory. This data cannot be erased by conventional diagnostic tools and leads to persistent error codes like B0030, even if all external components remain intact.
Although less common, communication problems caused by damaged wiring harnesses, corroded connectors on the control unit, or malfunctions in the CAN bus system can also trigger this error. Similarly, erroneous signals from peripheral sensors—such as crash or seat‑occupancy sensors—can push the control unit into an error state.
In some cases, software or firmware issues, such as outdated software versions or incorrect programming after a replacement, may also generate error code B0030.

Error code B0030 occurs across various manufacturers, particularly in models from Mazda, Land Rover, Porsche, Saab, and Subaru. The underlying causes are often manufacturer‑specific but generally relate to the electronics of the airbag control unit.
