What does error code B00588 mean?
Error code B00588 indicates a specific issue in the driver airbag ignition circuit. The airbag control unit has measured a resistance value that falls outside the permissible range—either too low or too high. This results in the deactivation of the driver airbag and the illumination of the airbag warning light.
Technically, the control unit continuously monitors the electrical resistance of the driver airbag ignition circuit. This circuit includes the control unit itself, the wiring harness, the slip ring (also called the winding spring), and the igniter within the airbag module. If the measured value deviates from the standard, the system interprets this as a fault that could compromise safe deployment in the event of a crash.
The corresponding diagnostic messages often read “Resistance too low” or “Resistance too high.” This precise indication provides technicians with an initial critical clue about the nature of the electrical problem—whether it’s a short circuit, a broken wire, or a contact issue.
What symptoms are associated with B00588?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B00588 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. The system actively signals a malfunction, indicating that the occupant protection systems are not fully operational—especially the driver airbag.
This warning light does not extinguish after starting the vehicle as usual but remains constantly lit. Typically, no other noticeable symptoms or impairments in driving behavior occur, since the fault affects only the passive safety system.

What are the most common causes of error code B00588?
The main causes of error code B00588 are almost always electrical in nature and relate to the connection between the control unit and the airbag. Common culprits include a defective slip ring, damaged cables, or corroded connector contacts. Less frequently, the airbag module itself or an internal fault within the control unit is responsible.
One of the most frequent sources of failure is the slip ring, also known as the winding spring. This component establishes the electrical connection to the steering wheel and is subject to significant mechanical wear due to constant rotational movement. A break in the conductive tracks leads to an open circuit (resistance too high).
Cables and connectors are equally often at fault. Damaged or frayed cables—particularly in the area of the steering column cover or the red airbag connector on the steering wheel—can cause malfunctions. Transition resistances caused by corrosion or loose contacts are also typical issues.
In rarer cases, the airbag module itself may have an internal defect that skews the resistance reading. To diagnose this, a special resistance simulator can be connected in place of the airbag to rule out the component as the source of the problem.
